You see, Lichtenstein I've always been on top of, but I couldn't place Albania.

See, I learned Lichtenstein and Luxembourg in school cos I was learning German. It's all the tiny islands I'm not so sure on. Ibiza, Majorca, Andorra, I know they're near Europe but I have no idea where.

That test needs the Faroe Islands, A country I would never have heard of if it wasn't for Championship Manager.

It was Europa Universalis that cemented the locations of the Balearic Islands, Madeira, etc, into my mind.

Isn't Tyr the name of the evil goddess in Breath of Fire?

Edit: Oh, Norse. Figures. Videogames.

Tyr is the norse god of single combat and heroic glory in Norse mythology. Which only makes the swimming garb produced by the company that shares his name all that much cooler.

They couldn't teach it - the countries didn't exist!

But did they teach the countries and capitals which did exist?

Well... they did at the boarding school. I gave up geography as soon as I could (age 13) so they might not have taught it at other schools.

I figure a lot of people in Austria will pretend not to ever have heard of Faroe Islands, in order to deny knowledge of the fact that the Austrian football team managed to not beat the Faroean team (as in: the game was a tie) a couple of years ago. That was awesome.

Although I have to admit I would probably fail to pinpoint the Faroe Islands on a map like this, anyway. I had troubles with some of those "little ones", not because I don't know that Andorra is "the little one between France and Spain" or Vatican City is "(one of) the little one(s) in Italy", but because it's difficult to hit the exact right spot on the map anyway. My impression is that there's a lot of luck involved in that game, anyway - I'd say the difficulty varies wildly whether your first three countries are Russia, Poland and France or Andorra, Macedonia and Belarus, because in the first case, you got some nice outlines to work with, whereas in the second case, you can point somewhere in the general directions of those countries and hope that you haven't missed the spot by a millimeter or two.

And for the record, I did have to learn the European capitals in school. I'm scared of finding out how much I remember of it...

I mean, it's not impossible I was asleep or absent that term. Oh young dom, if I could talk some sense into you. Actually, I'd probably have to get someone else to do it.

The game is actually very forgiving about dragging and dropping countries. I scored 100% with that one, and my first country was Macedonia.

Got off work about an hour ago, did my Arabic homework, now I'm sipping on some Maker's flipping through outlines trying to find some inspiration to write an essay for a prof who like, leads expeditions to Mongolia to find the grave of Genghis Khan and shit.

What is up LPTJ.

That means that you've been more productive in that one hour than I've been all day so far. It's twenty past two, I've been at work for 5 hours, and all I got to show for it is that I entered bibliographical data for one (!) book into an EndNote database and have skim (!)-read and excerpted two (!) chapters of a book by Howard Becker, who is easier to read than just about any other sociologist, ever.

edit: and a couple of posts on the subject of fruits on LPTJ, of course. Let's not forget my greatest accomplishments.

edit: and I totally just showed a (presumably) Japanese exchange student the way to the International Relations office of the faculty, yay.

I would just like to register how cool I think EndNote is.  It works so fucking well with PubMed and Word, it's unreal.

Let me voice the dissent.  I fucking hate EndNote because I frequently go from computers w/o it to computers w/it and it's always like "Squick squawk I hate you."

Sad you're sick. I have no such excuse for being home. Except for being lame. I think my plan is to fix myself up a second helping of natchos and watch me some more Wire.

I was supposed to drive 6+ hours to see a show tonight but didn't feel like it.

I'm drunk on drinking too many Steve Guttenbergs & I just read the "Britney Spears - Blackout" thread, which I'd missed out on.  Oh my God I love you guys.

Either there is a funny new word filter in place or you need to get your ass to the booze thread and tell me what a "Steve Gutenberg" is.

Maybe I should invent a drink called the Julian Casablancas.

A Steve Guttenberg is one half tap water, one half Aristocrat vodka

a bleak drink for a bleak world
