is the only reason you're thinking about skipping it the fact that you can't really afford it? if so, i say go. you'll find the scratch somehow. if there are other factors, though, it may require more contemplation than that.

that's mostly it, but i also always feel a little shitty about going out to do something fun while erin stays home with finn. he'll be asleep already by the time i leave, though, so it's not like i'll be leaving her to feed him and bathe him and get him ready for bed. she went to the last gourds show with me and had a good time, but generally speaking, she's not much for live music. and it just so happened that her mom was in town last time and could babysit.

of course--i'm brainstorming, here--she's got a equestrian center "night ride" thing she's going to tonight while i watch finn, so it could be a trade-off.

man, it'd be nice to get there early, get a good seat, grab a beer, sit back and enjoy the show.

Everybody's relationship is different obviously but I do similar tradeoffs with Mindy quite a bit.  Though it's not so much a one-for-one trade as we just try to accommodate each other as much as we can.  She has some online groups that she meets with regularly, and I often watch the boys to allow her to do that, and I like to go out drinking or to a show.  As long as everything is discussed beforehand, it's usually kosher.

i agree with jim about this. i have a friend who is married with two children, and the relationship is HORRIBLY one sided where that kind of thing is concerned--if she wants to go to rollerderby practice or hang with her girl friends or whatever, it's assumed that he should stay home and watch the kids, but he never goes out to hang out unless it's either a) some activity that he can bring her and the kids along to, or b) if it's something adult-oriented like a show, they have to get one of their moms to watch the kids for the night so she can go too. i haven't hung out with him without her (and usually the kids too) there since before he was dating her. he's a really mellow, accomodating guy, and i feel like his wife totally takes advantage of that.

siiigh, not that this has anything to do with the current situation being discussed, honestly, it's just something that has bothered me for a long, long time, so i guess i'm using this opportunity to vent. davy, you should obviously check with erin and see how she feels about all this. i'm sure she's far more reasonable than my friend's wife.

yep. it's cool. we switched cars after i got off work tonight and she took mine to the equestrian center and i took the jeep + finn to the basketball courts for a little 1-on-1. then we stopped by the video store where the dude gave me disc 2 of scrubs season 5 ON THE HOUSE and on the way home, feelin' slick, i passed a group of sandwich-boarded little caesar's employees, alerting me to the fact that the new little caesar's is, in fact, open, and that i could pick up a "hot-n-ready" large cheese pizza for $5. which i did. cut up some slices, added chopped olives, fed finn, and then erin got home. we bathed him together, i asked her about the show, it was cool, and now she's putting finn to sleep.

that's how we roll.

usually.

Oh man. Hot 'n Ready. My buddy used to work at Little Caesar's and would bring us all the leftover hot 'n readies at the end of the night. He'd show up at our door with like 6 pizzas and we'd just be like, "Damn, Flowers." Then we'd all get drunk and eat pizza.

Well no, because that baseball diamond was in Iowa. It would have been silly to say it was Nebraska. But that's why he said no, because Iowa is not heaven. It's Iowa.

phosphorescent and bon iver tonight. i had not heard of bon iver, but apparently he's a pretty big deal because this thing's sold out and now i'm pretty bummed i'm missing phosphorescent. a quick search indicates that that bon iver record made pitchfork's 07 list.

goddamned pitchfork hype. i need to get my head outta my ass i think.

The Stumps (Wellington) & White Saucer (plus Djs Tanner, Seht and Wyatt Riot)
Saturday 26th April 2008, doors at 9.30
Whammy Bar, St Kevins Arcade - $10
****************************************************

The Stumps are a ‘supergroup’ of some of Wellingtons most prominent sound artists/musicians. Featuring Antony Milton (Sunken/NetherDawn/Glory Fckn Sun and also boss of PseudoArcana label), James Kirk (Sandoz Lab Technicians, Black Boned Angel) and Stephen Clover (Seht). Their sound moves from slowly evolving drones to noise prog rock, mixing in ‘free jazz drum splatter’ and psych-noise. Their initial LP, Split Fleet Dodge, was released to critical acclaim overseas, even making it to #18 in Thurston Moore and Byron Coleys best of 2006 list. This show marks the Stumps first show in Auckland, and will be one not to miss.

White Saucer are an avant-rock duo comprised of guitarist Alan Holt and drummer Stella Corkery. Inspired by the triple threat freedoms of free jazz, 20th century avant-garde and psychedelic/improvised rock music White Saucer have been flying their unique ‘freak flag’ since the mid 90’s.
They have played numerous shows and have released a number of records and appeared on several compilations. Their latest appearance being a remix of Marz Attax on the Coco Solid remix album - Denim & Leisure.
While primarily a drums and guitar band they also broaden their palette with electronics and acoustic percussion.

As if that wasn’t enough…

DJ Tanner will be making his first appearance, having escaped from next door Bob Saget to play the best garage-rock/psych/doo-wop you’ll hear through a large PA.
Seht will be Djing, a, uh.. DJ-Seht of unknown/known/awesome music sure to please your ears and the mysterious Wyatt Riot will also be making an appearance to play freshly burnt cds of music that you probably don’t know about yet. No-one knows much about Wyatt Riot, but its rumoured he has had his lower ribs removed to fit in a cd-burner and Ethernet port…..

Firstly, I've never seen The Stumps and am super excited about that shit. Various people I know swear by these fuckers.
Secondly, I'm DJ Tanner. I drunkenly agreed (& came up with the name) to do this a month or two ago but forgot all about it until receiving the email. I'm not sure the experimental folk will be that into The Spits. At least it's an excuse to buy heaps more records.
Should be a fun night though.

That sounds great man! Wish I was rich enough to come visit for it... time collecting my records back for afterwards... Doo wop, huh?

Why cant someone offer me a gig like that?

The Stumps are pretty great. Although Stephen Clover owes me money for records as well, and I haven't got hold of him for a while...

I just found out that Return to Forever are playing here in June. Holy crap.

Also, should I go to Zappa Plays Zappa? It's a few months off, but I should probably get a ticket if I want to go.

i went to school with him. basically, a goofy readhead with some unoffensive, slightly funky songs with a bit of hippyish optimism thrown in. i do like his voice though.

he has a few good songs and a few that will make you cringe.
