I've come across that before. It's odd.

Been listening to edison's Lambchop mix a lot. Pretty great! My favourite tune.

Pan Ten - A Crash Course In Pan Records [71.31]

1) NHK - Fu2 (from SND/NHK Split) [2.31]
2) Ben Vida - ssseeeeiiiiii (from Esstends-Esstends-Esstends) [7.13]
3) John Wiese - Alligator Born In Slow Motion (from Seven Of Wands) [3.41]
4) Heatsick - No Fixed Address (from Déviation) [7.41]
5) NHK'Koyxeи 587 (from Dance Classics Vol.1) [4.49]
6) NHK'Koyxeи 572_2 (from Dance Classics Vol.1) [4.27]
7) Eli Kezsler - Cold Pin 2 (from Catching Net) [14.19]
8) John Wiese - Corpse Solo (from Seven Of Wands) [3.44]
9) SND - 15/16 (from SND/NHK Split) [15.56]
10) Helm - Above All And Beyond (from Impossible Symmetry) [7.10]

Following Killdozer's and my never-ending conversation about how amazing this record label is, and fishjim's subsequent and innocent expression of admiration for the album art, I thought I'd attempt to represent the short life of Pan Records in a mix.

One intriguing thing about the label is that although the artists are quite unlike each other in many ways, there are several sonic themes running through these tracks. The NHK'Koyxeи album is the glittery disco heart of the mix and together with Heatsick and SND provide the recognisable, if seriously warped rhythm. The dismantling of percussion is taken much further on the concrete installation art of Eli Keszler and the sound collages of John Wiese, and these artiists share a sort of chaotic, pointillist DNA with the electronic squiggles of Ben Vida and Helm.

I strongly advise each and every one of you to download this mix, unzip it, stick it on your portable music device of choice and cancel all arrangements for the next 72 minutes.

I've listened to that NHK'Koyxen album, and it's really something else.

It's even endorsed by Ryan! :-)

You'd make a really good metalhead, pushing out introductory mixes at the slightest provocation in an evangelical act. The stories of Napalm Death shows in the 80s wouldn't hurt either.

I have a five hour train ride on Friday, so I've downloaded it. Still waiting on the introductory metal mix.

I've got a 4CD one that needs updating. coldie has a multi-volume one as well. Every metalhead of my acquaintance has something up their sleeve.

fishjim's subsequent and innocent expression of admiration for the album art,

Record nerd note. The artwork (at least for the vinyl releases) is made up of a standard cardboard sleeve with the main picture and then the geometric design silkscreened on an transparent PVC outer sleeve.

I emailed the guy who owns the label a few days back asking if there were any of the release/show posters available for purchase and he responded a few hours later saying he had none left but linking me to somewhere I could get a poster from a January PAN showcase for a reasonable price. Good people.

Great mix Nick.

Thanks! I know how much you dig the beats in NHK, Heatsick, Mark Fell and so on, but do you like the shattered percussion stuff on the Eli Keszler and John Wiese albums too? Because I've been obsessing over those albums lately.

I've not heard the Eli Keszler album at all. I should get on that. It took many listens to the John Wiese before it started to sink in properly but I've been returning to it often recently. I've been listening to that Ben Vida album regularly as well - although I couldn't begin to explain what I like about it. The Helm record hit me pretty hard right away and I've played that more than any other album in the last week or so.

I'm still waiting for responses to my 'early Swans' mix. Even though I suspect all are some variation of 'what the fuck is wrong with you?'

Yeah, this one just keeps going up and up in my estimation. Each of the five tracks has so much going on in it and such a unique kind of feel - it shares ideas with noisier drone like Yellow Swans or Concern, and maybe even a Miasmah-type doom vibe at times (those clanging bells on Arcane Matters are pretty Skodvin-esque), but it's just such a fully-realised trip of an album. Exactly the kind of new ground those genres need to find really.

Apparently, Helm and Heatsick were two halves of Birds Of Delay - I have a few of their releases somewhere but never really rated them that highly. Maybe I will revisit those some time.

I have to listen to that, I know, but I suspect it requires a certain mood/mental state, so I've been holding off for a while.

I enjoyed it, actually. I love being terrified.

Haven't gone back to it, though. I'm old and frail and want to live a few more years.

I liked it, did I not say?

Also, I have my Swans ticket for October.

I've been meaning to do a Cheater Slicks mix for a while. No idea if anyone's interested but here it is either way. 17 originals and covers spanning 25 years. Perfect for drinking, dancing, guitar strumming and wondering how everything slowly turned to shit without you noticing. Best played at deafening volume.

Bruno's Night Out
Walk Into The Sea

i immediately connected to the cheater slicks '100% bad energy rock and roll' since i was listening to it right after my so-called best friend said i was bad energy and to not call him anymore. it's like, if this is bad energy then so be it.
