For years I've been searching for the John Davis CD's on Shrimper. Is there any chance that anyone has these? THey completely don't exist on filesharing and I can't even find them on CD...not that I want to pay much for them, I've just always been curious to hear them.

I'm talking about the guy that was half of Folk Implosion with Lou Barlow - NOT the guy from Superdrag.

If anyone has this stuff, it's someone here.

It's not kosher to share full albums here, even OOP ones, but I did find this:

Interesting. I didn't know the other half of Folk Implosion was also named John Davis.

For the record, I would recommend Superdrag John Davis's solo work with the caveat that he sings a lot about Jesus and tends to favor Brian Wilson style sunshine pop over his more guitar-oriented work in Superdrag. But they're still good albums.

What does Folk Implosion John Davis's solo stuff sound like?

My copy of June of 44's Engine Takes To Water is lovely except that it is scratched and I can't get the first track to play/rip.  So basically I have never heard "Have a Safe Trip, Dear."  The rest of the album is so mind-bogglingly good I need to ask: can anyone upload that track for me?

This is an easy one, I suppose, but: I somehow just got the VU's "I'm Sticking With You" (as found on the "Fully Loaded" edition of Loaded and probably a dozen other releases) stuck in my head and want to listen to it properly now but apparently don't have it anywhere. Can anyone help out?

This is kind of stupid, because I know it was included on a mix Whit posted not long again, but what can I say, I was too lame to download it then:

Propaghandi - Refusing to be a Man

Also, whatever your favourite Sleater-Kinney song dealing with masculinities is -- A Real Man? Ballad of a Ladyman? Something else?

If you detect a certain theme and have something else that'd fit, that'd be great too.

Don't have either of those, but along those lines:

Bloodpact - From Zero To Six

Quote
There's a boy I know who is not quite sure where he stands. But with two feet grounded firmly in the real world, he knows he can't wear "fag" like it's a dollar-off admission badge. What little his peers can infer from the company he keeps, how he talks and dresses, no interest in football, date rape or the rest, is enough to earn their verbal and physical abuse. There's a girl I know whose first experiments with sex were in the safety of another girl's arms. She values it and hides it close to her heart to keep it from being exploited in the mainstream eye. Human sexuality is not just a one-way street. It can't be modeled in absolute polarity. Neither black nor white, neither wrong nor right, but so many shades of gray.

This is a fast, angry hardcore song, so I don't know if it'll appeal to you musically, but I figured I'd put it out there anyway, since it seems to fit with your theme.

Thanks, Andrew, that fits the theme perfectly indeed! Though I'd never have been able to tell if you hadn't also posted those lyrics, so thanks for that, too...

http://drop.io/masculininitymix#

I put "Refusing to be a Man," Sleater-Kinney's "I Wanna Be Yr Joey Ramone" (not necessarily their best song about masculinity, but the one on my computer right now), and Screeching Weasel's "I Wanna Be a Homosexual" because it might be relevant.

It's probably the identical title which suggested this to me, but would you be interested in an audio copy of 'A Real Man' by Ivor Cutler?

Quote
When I was 12 I wanted to be a real man — an old man with a beard, sitting at a table with a huge book full of wisdom. And what did society hold up to me for my admiration? A golfer, a boxer, a man who ran quickly; a soldier, a lawyer, a tycoon; a motorist, a pop star; a footballer. Into what kind of madhouse had I been born? And what have I become? A child, witlessly pouring out whatever enters my head. I am a madman and people gather to listen to me make a fool of myself. I am not a role model. This is my protection and security. I still long for the table and the book, the smell of an old man and an old book; the afternoon light fading.

Does that fit your bill?  Not sure I've accurately picked up on your theme.

EDIT: Here you go.  I knew I had it on my hard drive, but it was easier to find than I thought it would be.  The poor quality is due to it being a copy of a copy of a copy of a radio broadcast, I think.  It used to be on his website, but it's not there any more, and I don't think it ever turned up on an official album.  Whether or not it fits your bill, I don't think you'll regret hearing it (it's only 1'07" long).
