Dudes, a cool thing happened to me the other day. I've been trying for months to track down all these random Mason Jennings outtakes, right? After about a month of scouring the internet, I found all but one of them, "The Fisherman," which was an iTunes exclusive bonus track on In the Ever. You had to buy the entire mp3 album to get that track. I looked for that song for a solid two months on soulseek, had it in my wishlist or whatever, and the only versions I ever found had DRM all over them and were unplayable on my computer.

Then, just as I was about to give up and consider buying the entire album from iTunes to get that one song and complete my collection, I get a random email from an LPTJ reader with "The Fisherman" mp3 as an attachment. Wow! He signed up for an account here just so he could get access to my email address, then he sent me the song. Can you believe it?! I was so happy, man. I ended up sending him a drop with half a dozen of the MJ outtakes he was missing, so everybody won. But man, talk about a nice surprise.

The internet knows very little about Jackie DeShannon's 1965 Metric Music Demo, and definitely doesn't have it available. I want to hear the original version of "Don't Doubt Yourself, Babe".

Hey dudes, what's that Mountain Goats song that goes

Sure do love you
Sure do loooooooooooooove you

Question

I wanna listen to it real quick and see if it's appropriate to put it on Finn's iPod.

it is "Orange Ball of Hate," which, wow, did not used to sound like this!

(while I am admittedly something of a tapedeck reactionary, I am kind of grooving on this, actually).

Oh wow.  I wonder if that's his Les Paul or, if not, who he punched out and took it from.

Ok, so basically not appropriate at all.  Haha, even if he does reference a "stupid children's song."

I get that one line caught in my brain all the time, to the exclusion of the rest of the song.

So I'll open this up--let's make Finn a Mountain Goats mix. I'll be out and about for the rest of the night, but I'll have time to sit down with this after midnight. It'll be a challenge, I bet!

Lots of nature songs and songs about dogs and peanuts and seed packets and toys! But they can't have little zingers like "we are for some reason all the time bleeding!" It may be an EP!

I'll start things off with "US Mill."

Tianchi Lake
Idylls of the King (don't know about the "armies of ghosts" line though)

woah, is that it?  damn.

Blues in Dallas isn't inappropriate, and the casio could be fun for the kids. Onions might work. Brian says Fresh Berries For You.

I'm listening to Nothing For Juice at the moment and some of the possibilities are making me chuckle.

Finn, I will grab you by the ears, and you will know something.

It's hard isn't it? I was goimg to suggest Going to Utrecht, but it's a bit grim if he's listening closely to the lyrics and thinking about it...the now 9 year old loved Dance Music when he was 4, but he wasn't paying much attention to anything except the last line, which tickled him no end. Is he the kind of kid who listens closely to lyrics and sings along, or asks you quesitons about them?

The Monkey Song!

Cubs in Five would probably be fun for a kid who isn't going to get what the song actually means, but I don't know if you'd want to pick that.

"No, I Can't?!" I've always thought that song was devastating!

The others look promising, though.

Hey, so it looks like I'm gonna be interviewing Holly Golightly at her farm in Madison, Georgia.  She's got a new album of country type stuff called Medicine County coming out at the end of this month  and then she's going on tour.

I know she used to be in thee Headcoats, but I'm looking for a good primer on her musical output.  Any suggestions?

i saw her last Dec, w/ Lawyer Dave (i think that's his name).  she's more bluesy than Childish.  In Blood is a very good record to check out.

She was in the Headcoatees which was basically a female Headcoats with B Childish pulling the strings behind the scenes. She's done a handful of solo albums, all of which are pretty good. She's done a couple of great collaboration albums, one with Billy Childish and another with Dan Melchior. I could probably drop a couple of mp3's after work if you like.
