hah, you know, almanzo, gi is right about one thing--you seem champing at the bit to take a scathingly contrarian position whenever you can find one. i think this is why i disagree with you so damn much.
Not necessarily contrarian, just fiercely opinionated with bizarre non-empirical reasons behind the opinions.

Yeah, that's not something to be proud of, G.

i surprised myself by enjoying and quickly finishing w.g. sebald's
austerlitz
. there are only about half a dozen paragraph breaks in the entire book--no kidding--and only 2 or 3 line breaks--and i thought that would be a real obstacle for me, but in fact it made reading the book easier. there were no pauses; i literally had to tear my eyes off the page when i wanted to set the book down. it was just this cascade of images and moments, so rich that i'm sure i didn't get from it all i could have with a closer reading, but still, it was a pleasant and rewarding read.
now i'm onto ian mcewan's recent novella,
on chesil beach
. i haven't read much of him, but i like his writing very much. this story--about a newlywed couple's first night together (they're both virgins)--promises to be over much too soon. it was checked out everywhere i looked, and i was preparing to drive out to borders and pick it up--actually buy it, a hardcover!--when i got an email saying it was being held for me at the circulation desk of the local public library. score!
