hah, i will be sure to mention it. though their home base is dc these days, christian's down here a lot, and i think richmond is probably more hospitable to meadows than dc is.

that might not be a bad idea, though i'm not sure we really fit in with them, either.

also partisan will likely be touring with us and they = apocalyptic folk with (some) comus/king crimson-type prog moments

i saw earth and sir richard bishop the other night. sir richard bishop wasn't as good as i expected (i'd only heard one song by him and that turned out to be the only one i liked), but he did do a couple of nice singing bits and had the odd moment. his guitar sound seemed pretty horrible to me though. i'm pretty sure it was about what he was going for but it was so shrill that after about twenty minutes i didn't really want to hear any more of it. also i reflected that he wasn't quite as awesome a guitarist as i'd been led to believe. i'm sure people who like him will like him, though.

earth were something else. i don't really know how to do them justice in written description. i loved the slowness, loved how the drummer didn't just play slow but her whole body moved in slow motion all the time she was playing, loved the way they clearly were awesome at playing, and fitted together just right, loved several of the songs. the only things i didn't love: the keyboards were too loud at some points, and there was one song ("this is the newest song we've written") with a trombone that really shouldn't have been in there, if my ears are any judge. i think i'll be picking up a record by them pretty soon. highly recommended show.

Thanks for that write-up, I'm going to see that Bishop/Earth combo too in a couple of weeks. I've seen Sir Richard Bishop before (which I really enjoyed) so no surprises there but also looking very much forward to Earth now.

I went to go see Food for Animals and Mi Ami last night.  If you like hip-hop with huge experimental electronic beats and sick flows or if you like the Black Eyes (dischord) you should go check these guys out as the do a February tour.

Friday night was Tapmen/Bloody Souls/Damn Evangelist/Boss Christ at Whammy. Boss Christ did usual one man hillbilly schtick, meh. Damned Evangelist were a surf band, kinda funny but nothing to write home about. Bloody Souls were great. Best show I've seen them play, the place was fucking packed this point and energy levels were pretty high.
Tapemen were something else altogether. Good fucking lord they rocked. Three guys in white shirts, bow ties and full head masks. 3 of my favourite NZ musicians in disguise rocking balls. Started of with a guitar tech problem but bassist and drummer just locked into a sweet groove and struck awesome poses. Thick as fuck bass sound. Guitar problem sorted they just launched into awesomeness and people went batshit. I usually hate instrumental surf rock but this was just soo punked/blown out and fuzzed to all fuck. Killdozer danced like bastard.

on a side note Dead played the same night up the road. Rumours had been flying for a couple of weeks about the secret opening act. Sonic Youth were in town so everyone assumed it would be Lee or Thurston solo set. People were more excited about this than the Dead C. I found out in the afternoon the secret special performance was a solo set by Sonic Youth's soundman. Laughed my arse off. Although I heard he was OK. Still, that's some funny shit.

Last night was Sonic Youth playing Daydream Nation. Dead C opened played Helen Said. It was wonderful but they only played for 20 mins or so. Drummer looked pissed at the short set obviously wanting to carry on. Sonic Youth were great and hearing DN start to finish was pretty special. I couldn't really excited though. Maybe still hungover from night before. Two encores of songs from Rather Ripped. Brilliant. Finished with Pink Steam which was a loveley way to end things.

I saw Six Organs of Admittance play inside the chapel on the UVA campus last Friday night - pretty spectacular. The acoustics were suitably awesome, most dramatically on the acoustic stuff (a little something was lost with some of the electric stuff) and Ben Chasny's voice was in really fine form.

I mean - if you can have the opportunity to sit in a pew and listen to Six Organs of Admittance while staring at some crazy stained-glass Jesus windows ... I say you take it, that's all.

I have been slacking on reading/posting around here but I saw Six Organs about a month ago at Modified here in Phoenix and yeah, oh wow.

I was a little put off by the fact that the Modified had chairs set up but it was really fitting.  Their set started with just Ben, the first song was an acoustic instrumental.  Then he sang on a couple songs.  Then he started looping the slow figure he had been playing on the acoustic and picked up an electric.  And everything just built from there.  Ben's guitar tended towards the lower, deeper side while Elisa played more with distortion and noise.

haha, that's an awesome guitar in the corner.  i was across the street seeing Nowhere Man and Whiskey Girl perform at Carly's Bistro, but i kind of wanted to see that Six Organs of Admittance show.  what shows are you going to in the near future?  i've missed a couple i wanted to go see, but there's a crap ton of good shows coming up in the next couple of weeks.

Oh yeah, I saw Six Organs a few days ago! And Mick Turner opening for Six Organs! I'm not sure what to say except that it was a fantastic show. It was kind of disappointing in a way 'cause not many people were there and some drunk pricks kept talking during the Six Organs set--literally the first time I ever turned around at a show and asked someone to STFU--but man, yeah, it was fucking great.

Oh, it's worth noting that the electric part of the set included Mick Turner's drummer as well, so it was fucking rock out city.

So KDSB dragged me over to this show (along with another friend) after the Dead C. I enjoyed Damned Evangelist slightly more than he did and Bloody Souls slightly less - the latter evoked Mule or some similar early-90's Touch and Go vibe, but their drummer didn't quite hold up their end of the deal.

But yeah, Tapemen ruled. Danced my ass off as well, had a great time. Met Good Intentions too! Auckland LPTJ in the house!

Actually, he was more than "OK" - I reckon he was pretty great. Dude's name is Aaron from the Tall Firs, he was doing a solo gig of their songs. I am particularly fond of "So Messed Up". Dead C. were a gas too, not headscratchy at all but great rhythmic pounding with beautiful drones over it. What a great freaking night.

Hard to tell, but Tapemen dont wear headmasks- usually they unspool video tapes and wrap they heads in that. But damn yeah, real keen to see them. Dylan rocked as Tapeman, have yet to see the Tapemen but how could they not be cool?

Dammit though, Immortal appartntly are going to cost $70NZ! I was looking forward to that show! Well, flag, I guess.

Slayer were $80. Can't you, like, save up some money to go to the undoubtedly RAWK show Immortal are gonna put on? I know money's tight, and you've been spoilt by having your dad put your name at the door.

President's Day Death Metal Extravaganza!!!!!

Two local slam death bands, deathcore act having a CD release, and one really brutal band from Penn played in Boston last night.  This first band you see above were very festive with costume, bubble machines, glitter, beach balls, a couple dozen tiny plastic horses....and this bizarre fat guy dressed in garbage bags, covered with yellow mustard.

He just stood there, stage left the whole set, eating taco bell.

Looks like a blast except for the food-related act. Generally, due to a phobia of vomit, extreme and food-related acts are nogo for me.

He never broke out the flying V.  I was a little let down.

You are right on there being some great shows coming up.  I am still contemplating Liars/No Age tomorrow night but will almost certainly make it to This Will Destroy You on the 26th.  Hopefully I will see the Phoenix Symphony player Mahler's 5th on the 2nd.

Then Bill Callahan and Jonathan Meiburg are playing at the Rhythm Room!  I am excited about that one.  And Why? on the 9th!

Certainly let me know if you're gonna make it to any of those shows or if there are other good ones I have missed.

I got conned by a friend into wielding a video camera at the debut performance of the Otahu Pimpin' Crew. I was bemused by their MySpace page (two of the guys are from a punk band and my friend described them as a joke band) but I was shocked to discover they were actually ridiculously entertaining, and would go back and see them voluntarily. They could actually be ... not big, but perhaps medium.

So So Modern on Saturday.

cool.  i just downloaded one song from pitchfork 'chipping ice'  and i really like it.

its also got these guys playing

CHINESE STARS (ex-Arab On Radar)
THESE ARE POWERS (ex-Liars)
THE VULTURES (ex-Plot To Blow Up The Eiffel Tower)
SOFT SHOULDER

so it should be a pretty rawkus show.  sorry bill callahan.  i'll just listen to 'a river ain't too much to love' a couple more times in stead of going to your show.
