$400, plz - Veneer "Magazine"

I just love hare-brained ideas.
http://www.veneermagazine.com/
Basically, it's a $400 subscription to this magazine/journal/squarebound art book thing that will come out four times a year over the next five years, and when it's finished, you get
a fucking handmade bookshelf to keep it in
. Issue 2 already comes with a 7", and future issues are supposed to have weird stuff included. All this from the Marriage Records (Thanksgiving, the Blow, friends of K records and stuff) crew.
I bought the first issue, and it's pretty neat - basically like
Believer
mag in that the issue is made up of a bunch of disparate articles about various subject matters written by people who are clearly experts in their fields. Some are fun (guy writing about his time spent addicted to World of Warcraft), some are truly fascinating (a whole report on how people stole a radioactive element out of an X-ray machine in Brazil in the eighties and carried it around, eating it, giving it to friends, etc.), and some are completely pointless and nichey (an impenetrably detailed review of a digital camera that might honestly be too complex for even a dedicated photography mag).
Still, I kind of just want to spend the $400. If you subscribe any time, you get all of the issues - it's being done as what they call an "edition" rather than an issue-by-issue thing. Cool concept. But $400...
damn

i find this interesting, but there's no WAY i will EVER be able to afford it. bummer.
i even had to quit reading "the believer" about 6 months ago, after buying every single issue from #1 on. i just didn't have the time to get through one issue a month anymore. and the $8 per month is only justifiable if i'm actually reading the damn thing.

I have a veneer because I got hit in the face with the lid of a cooler the summer after my senior year. Chipped half my big-ass front tooth off.
I don't think it was 400 dollars but it was probably a couple hundred.
anyways...sounds like a cool mag but no way am I dropping 400 bucks on it. 400 bucks could instead get me about 20 more handles of whiskey! Maybe someone will upload a .pdf of them sometime? the magazines, not the handles of whiskey

Generally when I buy a magazine I like it to be put together by people whose design aesthetics don't infuriate me.

I was just looking at what seemed to be the first issue's articles online, but couldn't find anything about who the authors are. It doesn't seem to list their credentials anywhere.

They're in the actual issue, and seem legit. One guy's an esteemed prof at my alma mater.

it is a challenging, provocative project, to be sure.
Did you see the thing about the release party? They had a paintball game, where the authors of the articles tried to read their work through megaphones, while the editorial staff defended them from attack from the angry rifle-wielding crowd.
It happened just before What The Heck Fest, and you could recognize the people who'd been at the release party by their nasty welts.

If by "challening, provocative" you mean "stupid, annoying," then yes.

It's mildly interesting, but I'm not sure I see how it's either challenging or provocative.

By that token, a car alarm is challenging and provocative.
