Has anyone else been subjected to the endless succession of CNN human interest stories about their pet Iraqi boy? This shit is inexcusable

Did anyone else catch any of the VH1 Classic's Seven Ages of Rock? I am a sucker for these sorts of shows, but this one involved Dennis Hopper reading some pretty stupid scripts about, like, Manchester and Black Flag and Television and stuff, and his voice just reminds me of the investment commercials he does now, so it was pretty wrong. Still, I watched like four of the Seven Ages.

Really? With the strike and all, my DVR is pretty empty. But then, I am unemployed, so I have plenty of time for teevee.

well, i'm dvr-ing cool movies that come on, and countdown with keith olbermann, and the reruns of the henry rollins show because before now i've never had a chance to watch that show and have therefore not seen most of the episodes, and headbanger's ball, and between those things i'm accumulating quite a bit of unwatched backlog. i haven't even checked in the last week or two to see if any other cool movies are coming up, because i have something like a dozen that i haven't yet watched already on my dvr.

well, i'm dvr-ing cool movies that come on,
TCM has some good--or at least obscure/otherwise-tough-to-find--stuff coming up this month, including Sam Fuller's
Park Row
,
Tell Them Willie Boy is Here
, and the notorious 1968 Otto Preminger disaster
Skidoo
. I don't get the channel, but I'm having my mother record them for me.
(edit: on good old-fashioned VHS, not DV-R)

Ah. I see. I thought it might be a new show called "TV Critics", and I had visions of some single-camera dramedy about people who post on Television Without Pity.

So I picked up season one of
Friday Night Lights
and watched about the first half of it over Christmas with the family (and then my sister pulled an all nighter and watched the entire rest of the series the night before I flew home, I guess to save the cost of renting it...). Needless to say, you guys are right, it's pretty great.

Some thoughts on the new episode of the Wire:
HERE BE SPOILERS, DON'T FUCKIN READ IT IF YOU DON'T WANNA KNOW
I'm glad to see that Herc landed on his feet, regardless of whether he deserved it or not. I always thought a story thread or two on the top-dollar defense lawyers like Levy could be really interesting, and it looks like we might be getting some of that.
Simon is, as I indicated about, still recycling stories from Homicide, both the book and the series. That's cool.
The newsroom scenes, which I was initially ambivalent about, are tight and interesting, although I'm sure there's going to be some preachy stuff coming. The New Yorker piece from a couple months ago indicated that Simon's got some serious bones to pick with the Sun. I don't think he'll use it exclusively as a soap box, but he's definitely getting his jabs in. It is great to see Clark Johnson again, though.
It's hard to tell what Marlo and Chris are up to at the courthouse, reading up on the port case files. Chris took a picture of Sergei ('Boris') from one of the files in this episode, and it would appear to me that they're going to try to make contact with the Greeks through their former lieutenant and thus go around Joe and the co-op for his herion--though why Sergei would want to help them is beyond me. This is supported by the fact that Marlo seems more cocky than usual at the co-op meetings. Slim Charles even tells Joe, 'Marlo's into some shit.' Should be interesting. I've been waiting for one and a half seasons to see this guy get his head ventilated; hopefully they won't let me down.
Carcetti is a piece of shit, but then Carcetti was always a piece of shit.
