Don't be a gimp dude, they're gonna get to it
Really Omar is nowhere near the most compelling character on the show anymore

he hasn't been in any of the season openers and except for season 3 he didn't show up till episode 3. i would have been more surprised if he did show.
i'm surprised at the tease of the "new day"--not that it was yanked out from under, but that it was promised in a season finale and yanked out from under in the interim. carcetti came off too good by the end of season 4; i almost forgot how much of a piece of shit he was.

Not me, but I've always hated that guy, even when I sort of liked him. I kinda figured he wouldn't live up to his promises after they learned of the school budget; without taking the state money, there's really no way he COULD have lived up to em unless he wanted his political career to stop at the mayor's office. See, that's the problem that McNulty articulates in se. 1: everyone's got a fucking future; nobody wants to do the work in front of them except as a means of getting noticed and advancing. Just like that cocky little smug fucker at the Sun office. Just like everyone in the department.
BTW, thanks for the heads up on ep. 2! Ep. 5 is out there, too. This happened last year as well for some reason, with the episodes getting linked from the screeners out of sequence.

You know, it was a lot easier when I was watching The Wire after it had already aired. I HATE waiting. Also, wmv?!

WMV?
That stupid format. It won't play in my dvd player, and when I tried to convert it to avi it came out all pixelated and crappy, so I have to watch it on my computer. (Mostly I'm just being crabby. So far, the season is really good.)

Oh yeah, you don't wanna convert it. I got an AV cable for my notebook so I don't have to go through the tedious process of burning DVDs anymore. I wish I had a TV with wireless...

No shit! Why wouldn't he wait until he got a solo call to do something like that? I mean, why put Bunk at risk?

i think the above is a major theme. it made me so sad to see it made so plain in so many of the storylines.
hopefully this season will get to be less of a bummer as it goes on.

I was really hoping (episode 2) that
Avon was there to put Marlo in his place, but no such luck. Maybe he has a larger plan? I can't imagine Avon dropping that grudge so easily, especially just for money. He was always the soldier, not the businessman.
And yeah, Andrew, I don't think it's going to be less of a bummer.

Nah. You can see throughout se. 3 the way that Avon really respects Marlo. I'm too drunk to remember specific scenes, but I do remember Wood Harris playing the reaction to some of Marlo's deviousness with a big shit eating grin and a knowing nod. Although it hasn't been discussed at length, I think the west side/east side rift is much more significant than what was essentially a run of the mill turf war. We don't see Avon and Prop Joe together much, but judging from the first season episode with the Eside/Wside ball game, Avon fucking despises Prop Joe. My heart sank when I saw how the meeting went between Avon and Marlo, but as I thought back through the previous four seasons, it kind of made sense. Remember, Avon was against sharing any territory with Joe from the beginning, and it's partially because he never backed down on that that he's in prison today.
Then again, this show can surprise the fuck out of you, so perhaps Avon is just stringing Marlo along in some grand scheme. I doubt it, though.
Also, they're setting up a confrontation between Omar and Michael. Before the start of this season I was convinced that Michael was destined to off the big O, and though I'm still mostly convinced of it, it seems that they've chosen to give Michael a conscience. Shit could play out any number of ways, but rest assured there will be a scene in the next eight episodes that has Michael with a gun on Omar.

re: Wire, season 5, episodes 1 and 2 only:
Avon may not be too fond of Proposition Joe, but what about Slim Charles? Surely he has an alliance there? Or not? But between Slim whispering in Prop Joe's ear about Marlo and Avon being a little too nice...
On another note, my one issue with the show is its portrayal of defense attorneys. Levy is one sour caricature. Anyway, fuck you, Herc.

Episode 6 out now but still no 3 or 4. Am I the only who's enjoying speculating as to the identity of this "Warcloud" person leaking them? Given the out-of-orderness, the weird format, and the fact that it's not a torrent scene release group doing this, he almost HAS to be some low-level HBO or Comcast worker and not a TV critic.
