Went to Burp Castle last night. Had an Oak Arrogant Bastard, a Schneider Weisse, and the house cocktail, a Black Bear Stout with a dash of some Framboise whose name I didn't catch.

Happy Repeal Day!!!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twenty-first_Amendment_to_the_United_States_Constitution

I think I'll celebrate by stopping by the Clark St. Ale House later and trying the new Kalamazoo Royal Amber Ale (that's the alternate brand Bell's created to get back into the Illinois market)

Happy repeal day indeed!  I'll have to mix myself up something from the piles of liquor we have downstairs.

From Wikipedia

Quote
Bell's was formerly available in Illinois, but was pulled from the market on October 12, 2006. In accordance with a 1982 Illinois law which protects the interests of beer distributors (the Beer Industry Fair Dealing Act), the Chicago distributor (Union Beverage) attempted to sell its Bell's distribution rights to a competitor, Chicago Beverage Systems (CBS). In meeting with CBS executives, owner Larry Bell became concerned that his full product line would not be adequately represented by CBS. Having no legal ability to prevent Union from selling its distribution rights, Bell chose what he saw as his only recourse — to pull his products from the entire Illinois market, which represented over USD $1.3 million per year for Bell's Brewery. Due to the vagueness of the law, which does not specify a "lapse period," it is likely that if Bell's ever attempts to return to Illinois distribution, Union Beverage's parent company (National Wine and Spirits) will have the right to demand substantial compensation from the distributor.[1]

BUT if a new brand is created, the brewer can designate a distributor to handle the new brand.

Here is a recent interview with Larry Bell about the situation

some repeal revelers were on broadway the other day handing out buttons and wearing fedoras and stuff.  it was cute, but I would have been more interested if they'd been handing out booze.

So I went to this bar place tonight and they had these drinks, and on this one portion of the menu supposedly all the drinks had 5 shots of liquor in them, and they only let you order 2 of those, so I ordered 2 of them and then helped Melissa finish one of hers and helped some other dude finish one of his and man... either there were definitely not 5 shots of liquor in those drinks or I'm a raging alcoholic because I am not feeling like 10+ shots right now. I'm thinking about drinking some of my cheap whiskey just to make sure I feel as shitty tomorrow as I'm supposed to.

Only been there a coupla times- I decided never to go to a place that would limit the amount of drinks I could have...at least until I tip over a table or throw up on the floor.

Wait - that place is still open?  Man, I didn't even think to go there this summer cos, last time I was there, the bar guy was totally depressed because they'd just found out they'd have to shut down. Gah...

today I went to a glög party.  I'm not a huge glög fan (and it sounds like gluk when the swedes say it), but this was delicious.  if I hadn't had to leave I would have drunk gallons.  Swedes sure know how to do a proper Christmas party.

Have you had their Christmas beer? It's good, but I'm not sure I could drink a magnum of it all at once. It tastes like a malty christmas cookie. In a good way. But still, I think a magnum might be a bit much.

I don't know what I'm gonna do when this bottle of McCallan is spent.  What would you recommend in the $15-$25 range so my gf doesn't yell at me?

OK but my whiskey expertise runs mostly to bourbons and little else.  I don't dig Canadian whiskeys, I like Irish whiskeys but I haven't worked my way through as many as I'd like, and I know absolute fuck-all about scotch.

Maker's Mark is usually less then $25.  If you haven't had a lot of bourbon, it's a pretty good jumping off point.  There are more complex bourbons out there once you've developed your palate a bit.  W.L. Weller has a couple of "Old Weller" bottles in the $15-20 range that are probably at least the equal of Maker's Mark if not better.  I've always been a fan of Old Granddad but I may be the only one.  Buffalo Trace runs around $20.  Wild Turkey 101 should be well under $25 and their Russell's Reserve should be right around $25.  A lot of pretty good bourbons often can be found for right around $25 actually, Woodford Reserve, Knob Creek, etc.

Outside the bourbon realm, Old Overholt is a good cheap rye whiskey, probably under $15 actually.  That's all I've got.

I figured I'd be right around the $25 dollar end.

I've seen knob creek for a lot more than that though I think.

I was checking prices at http://www.binnys.com for the stuff that I was posting.  I've seen Knob Creek for $28, I've also seen it for $22.  The brands I mentioned are those you might be able to find in your price range.

1) acquire good whiskey
2) drink it
3) inhale at the wrong time
4) curse and wonder why the hell you did that to yourself
5) not really be very into whiskey
6) figure out how to not burn your dumb ass
7) drink it
8) start to like it
