He hadn't yet been abandoned (assuming you mean being put on the train). I think it was partly because he had been checking out Henry (reading his diary and such) and partly acting out because of the void he felt opening up between him and his father once he got deaf.

The latter makes the most sense. I guess it just seemed so sudden; we knew, of course, that HM was miserable, but he hadn't really acted out before this--and deciding to burn down the cabin containing his sleeping father and uncle is kind of a leap from just looking grumpy all the time.

(Obvs. HM was traumatized by the rig explosion and his hearing loss and acting out isn't surprising, it's just the severity of the act itself that takes me aback.)

I think it's also supposed to be a portrayal of the longer-term psychological effects of growing up with a violent sociopath as your only role model

That works for me.

I mean, all things considered, that was really the only part of the film I didn't think really worked all that well, and it's a pretty minor complaint ...

so tonight i watched one of the movies i dvr-ed back when i first got a dvr and never made time to watch. it was "tape", directed by richard linklater and featuring only 3 actors over the course of 90 minutes, during which they do nothing but sit in a room and talk. i wasn't sure what it was going to be about but it ended up getting super intense by the end, even though, as i said, all that really ever happened was that three people (sometimes only two) sat around a room and talked. it was really really good. i'm glad i watched it.

Hey, I remember that one. Uma and Ethan and some other guy. Has that great line where Uma flushes Ethan's stash and he's bitching and she's like "There'll be other drugs" and he goes "Yeah, but I really liked those ones"

I just watched Shogun Assassin and the only thing I kept thinking throughout the movie was that I wished somebody would rerelease it getting rid of the cheesy synth soundtrack and replacing it with the appropriate songs from Liquid Swords.  That would be pretty rad.

Have I mentioned here that I saw him in a play once and he's insanely good-looking in person? I mean, he looks fine on the screen, but in person. . . he can't be human.

I saw Gone Baby Gone. It was a lot better than I expected it to be, actually. (Granted, I wasn't expecting much.)

Yes, that's where I went.  It's a 5 minute walk from my apartment, so I go there all the time.  It's a little dingy but it's nice enough, well worth the price.

Better than $10 downtown. And sometimes I don't have patience to wait until DVD. I still want to see Enchanted.

it's definitely worth $3!  Unless you're pollo.  He'd stab his eyes out.

I wonder what he'd do if he had to watch Juno AND Enchanted back to back?

Drive to my apartment and murder me?

I actually had pretty low expectations for Enchanted, given how much I hate Patrick Dempsey, but it's pretty undeniably cute.  Then again I like Amy Adams way more than a lot of people.

haha then you should definitely see Enchanted.  If she can melt Patrick Dempsey's icy heart, what chance do I have?

Drive to my apartment and murder me? watch episodes of CW shows for the rest of the night
fixed.

Enchanted was cuter than it had a right to be. I don't have a problem with Patrick Dempsey, though.

la terza madre, the mother of tears! i know andrew and sigh your children are argento fans. i think you two will dig it. probably no one else. it's pretty fucked up. i don't want to spoil anything but the first murder is a bit of a shock even for a hardened argento fan familiar with his mix of sensuality and murder. totally awesome,  a return to form. i mean, when the mother of tears is lapping the wet trails of tears from the cheek of a woman who had a spear inserted from her vagina to her mouth, while a monkey plays in the background -- you've been dealt a winning hand!

Asia's in that one, right? She's pretty much the only reason I'd watch an Argento film.

it's pretty crazy! i loved it. real campy, and had a 70's satanic majesty to it, it's like what one always imagined was on the old battered vhs tapes in sleazy video stores -- the tapes with titles like the antichrist and the witching and box art splattered with upside down crosses and faces with eyes erupting in cold flames, the same movies that when you got em home, came back as big disappointments. this is the real thing! it was totally awesome, but i don't know how much appeal it has to non-argento fans. totally retro. kind of reminded me of fulci in how over the top it was. for 70's/80's horror fans {of foreign horror} only i guess.

hmm. i'm not much of a fulci fan, honestly--i think some of his movies are pretty stupid because he doesn't like to have coherent plots for most of them, and i can't really roll with that. of course, argento's movies tend to have really convoluted plots that are often rendered incoherent by the shortened us cuts of them, so i guess it's sort of the same thing.
