the reason i say fulci is because the gore is off the hook for an argento movie. i mean, off the hook. it's got a regular argento plot though.

I posted about Mother of Tears awhile ago, and while I can't quite share milly's full enthusiasm--those goddamned Hot Topic witches are just too silly even for me--I can definitely see the old (big box with interior plastic case) VHS-tape analogy. Asia's in it, but I wasn't really feeling her. Did the movie actually get a U.S. release? I haven't seen anything about that anywhere.

hmm. i'm not much of a fulci fan, honestly--i think some of his movies are pretty stupid because he doesn't like to have coherent plots for most of them, and i can't really roll with that.
Yeah, some of them are, but his late-60s/early 70s stuff (like Perversion Story, Lizard in a Woman's Skin, and esp. Don't Torture a Duckling) are a world apart from his Zombie/New York Ripper era style--quite atmospheric and even reasonably coherent.

oh i saw rambo and it was everything i was expecting. hilariously awful dialog/nonacting (5%), insanely over the top rabid bloodletting of the most graphic and grisly sort (95%). the movie felt like it was about 20 minutes long.
really the fact that this movie got an R rating for its violence means that from here on out nothing anywhere should ever get an NC-17 rating for violence. ever.
needless to say i thoroughly enjoyed it.

I'm catching up after seeing about 2 films in the last 2 years.
In the last week I've seen Babel, The Departed, Broken Flowers, Sideways and Tell No One.
I liked all of them to some extent. Tell No One was probably the most enjoyable, the second half of The Departed made up for a pretty boring first hour, Broken Flowers was better than I expected (Lost In Translation is pretty much my most hated film ever), Sideways nowhere near as good as I had hoped.

Went to see the Savages on Sunday night, because after working in a care home all day the best thing to do is watch a film about grown up children putting their father in a care home. Nonetheless it was a pretty fine film, I've been waiting for Amy Jenkins follow up to the slums of beverly hills for a while, and whilst this wasn't quite as lovable it deserves two fine thumbs up. Hoffman and Linney were fucking aces, although Hoffman looked so much like my Globalisation prof it was kinda freaky.
Also, watched Lianna which was odd, but sweet. Although quite dated. I kinda want to know what whit thinks about this as it fits in the pantheon of 80's queer films that I'm sure he knows like the back of his hand.

Wait, one more quick one. It's only page 19 anyway.

Hi Dom! I like Lianna quite a bit. "Dated" for sure, and maybe a little clumsy, but I think it's a moving, endearing film, and Sayles also gets credit for making a lesbian-themed movie in 1982, which was difficult to finance and faced the wrath and indifference of both straight audiences AND lesbians resistant to a film by a straight guy (a justified resistance, I'd contend, given history and all). Actually, I just read a rather scornful aside about Lianna recently, maybe even from a lesbian film theorist in the 80s, but I can't quite place it right now. It'll probably nag at me all day. But yeah, in short, I like this, and I like Sayles in general. More than "like" most of the time, in fact, though not as much in recent years.
Anyway, like pollo said:

That's almost precisely the post I was just about to make when I recalled a mention of this movie earlier. I had the pleasure of seeing it with my parents, brother, and an otherwise entirely empty theater this evening, and it was a blast. This has gotta be the most brutal film to come out of Hollywood in a long, long time. I couldn't believe Sly even threw in some graphic child-killing, even the Italian grindhouse filmmakers of the 70s had enough decency to use suggestion alone in that area for the most part.

oh whoops, fuck--I just revived a dead thread, didn't I? My bad; I just did a search for "Rambo" and quoted it. The price of necro-avoidance is eternal vigilance, apparently. Or to paraphrase Sly from this masterpiece, we can post for nothing, or we can close threads for something.

heh, I presumed this was reviving the old "still better than whit's movie thread" rivalry. That always amused me. It was like there was thread for people who knew shit (ie you, hannah, and difficult) and a thread for us plebs to talk about whatever spiderman iteration we're on now.
