So right now I'm watching The Brain That Wouldn't Die on cable access' "Nightmare Sin-ema".

Now, I first saw this movie on MST3K (a show that I'll always have a special spot in my heart for, not only for the nerdiness but because it was produced by my hometown heroes) and while I'm rarely on a big b-movie kick, I gotta give "Wolfman Mac" some credit for dragging his ass out and doing a weekly show. There's no reason why I don't have a public access show, but he's got one and I don't and there's something admirable about being the guy who shows up and  gets the job done. And really, while I'm not unbelievably huge into b-horror, I can definitely get down with the level of kooky kitch.

(Now the guy's trolling for chicks to get a body for the brain that wouldn't die. I couldn't make this up.)

I have a copy of this movie on a dvd with Carnival of Souls and some other things.

I finally got around to seeing Juno. I might have liked it more if I didn't pretty much hate her character.

though watching it out-of-context doesn't quite do the WTFness justice.

Also I'm about 90% sure that Timberlake is actually drunk there.

ok, that is pure craziness. i'm gonna have to watch that movie as soon as i can.

also, dudes, i just ordered one of those 50-horror-movies dvd packs from amazon. it wasn't the one that looked like the best, but it looked pretty good and it was about $12 including postage. i'll pick up the one that i thought was the best next time i get paid (it's gonna run me about $20). anyway, here's what's on it:

1. Dr. Jeckyll & Mr. Hyde, 2. Bluebeard, 3. Corpse Vanishes, 4. Doomed to Die, 5. Amazing Transparent Man, 6. Night of the Living Dead, 7. Atomic Age Vampire, 8. Satanic Rites of Dracula, 9. Creature From the Haunted Sea, 10. Eaten Alive, 11. Nosferatu, 12. Swamp Women, 13. World Gone Mad, 14. Amazing Mr. X, 15. Dead Men Walk, 16. Monster Maker, 17. Tormented, 18. Monster Walks, 19. Brain That Wouldn't Die, 20. Last Man on Earth, 21. Gorilla, 22. Shriek in the Night, 23. Bloodlust, 24. House on Haunted Hill, 25. Beast of Yucca Flats, 26. King of the Zombies, 27. Dementia, 28. Phantom from the 10,000 Leagues, 29. Severed Arm, 30. Devil's Hand, 31. Last Woman on Earth, 32. Vampire Bat, 33. Carnival of Souls, 34. Attack of the Giant Leeches, 35. Ape, 36. I Bury the Living, 37. Nightmare Castle, 38. One Body Too Many, 39. White Zombie, 40. Maniac, 41. Invisible Ghost, 42. Count Dracula and his Vampire Brides, 43. Revolt of the Zombies, 44. Giant Gila Monster, 45. Fatal Hour, 46. Wasp Woman, 47. Bride of the Gorilla, 48. Condemned to Live, 49. Beast from the Haunted Cave, 50. Crawling Eye.

whit or anyone else, any thoughts? i know some of these are gonna be incredibly bad, but that's kinda awesome if you ask me. i'm just wondering if there are any diamonds in the rough hidden in there.

Andrew, I know I plug this a bunch, but you might want to check out Trailers from Hell for commentary on some of them -- or how they were marketed, at least. Looks like they do White Zombie, House on Haunted Hill, maybe a few others.

I'll definitely rep for Giant Gila Monster & the Killer Leeches, two of my favorite monster movies, as I think I've mentioned here before. Also the Corman movies are a lot of fun--#s 9, 31, and 46 especially, for me.

As far as hidden gems, my votes go to Bluebeard (assuming it's the 1944 version with John Carradine--directed by Edgar Ulmer of Detour fame!) and Maniac (assuming it's the absolutely batshit insane 1934 Dwain Esper flick--my DVD copy has the classic tag line "He menaced women with weird desires"), about which some really interesting scholarly writing has been done by Eric Schaefer.

While I haven't seen all 50 of those, the only one that I have seen and found truly worthless is The Ape, one dull piece of hackwork with Boris Karloff that even the MST3K dudes would have trouble redeeming.

also--re:Andrew's 50-pack--I thought for certain Satanic Rites of Dracula was a Hammer movie (it's got Christopher Lee), so I have no idea what it's doing there, presumably in the public domain. Eaten Alive also seems a little jarringly out of place.

On the extras to Blissfully Yours he mentions being influenced by an American b-movie, but he can't remember the title. I'm 99.9% certain he's talking about Grizzly (1976), so I'd be interested in hearing any further thoughts he has on that, its director William Girdler, or 1970s grindhouse/b/drive-in films as a source of inspiration in general.

re: Andrew's movies, Carnival of Souls alone is worth $12*. I have a soft spot for some of the others in there, too, (Wasp Woman, The Brain that Wouldn't Die. . . ). I'd call it a good purchase.

re: lastclearchance. How could you not like Night of the Hunter?! It's so creepy. Kiss Me Deadly is a favorite.

ok, thanks, that's the kind of commentary i was looking for. i looked up maniac because i was all "what, that slasher movie from 1980? that seems a bit out of context", and found the 1934 version, and i'm assuming it's that one. sounds cool from your description.

i don't know if you've seen it, and if you have i'd love your opinion on it, but i also looked up "dementia" to make sure it wasn't the same as "dementia 13" and found this movie from 1955, which sounds fucking intense. that was a big deciding factor in my ordering this rather than the other package i was eyeing, which had more stuff on it that i've wanted to see for a while than this one does (it had bava's "shock" on it! don't worry, i'll go back and get that one soon)--i really want to see if "dementia" is as cool as the imdb descriptions make it sound. do you know if it is? or did i get suckered?

re: lastclearchance. How could you not like Night of the Hunter?!

yeah, I wondered this too. And agreed wholeheartedly on Carnival of Souls, I just didn't think it counted as a hidden diamond there. Maybe my being wrapped up in my pathetic little world of trash cinema warps my notion of "hidden," though; I guess Criterion did release a version of that film, but I'm not sure it gets the attention it deserves (it might well, I just have no idea).

I just assumed that was a typo for what was supposed to D13 (since that's on virtually every PD-catchall collection), but whoa--no, I haven't seen that, but I damn sure will soon, it sounds great.
