On the extras to Blissfully Yours he mentions being influenced by an American b-movie, but he can't remember the title. I'm 99.9% certain he's talking about Grizzly (1976), so I'd be interested in hearing any further thoughts he has on that, its director William Girdler, or 1970s grindhouse/b/drive-in films as a source of inspiration in general.
he thought you meant tropical malady. at any rate he didn't remember that comment. he said blissfully yours was inspired by hitchcock and by thai b-movies. but he did just get grizzly at kim's while he was in new york.
Awesome. While I haven't actually seen Tropical Malady, it does seem like Grizzly would be more likely to have informed it than BY, but the comment was definitely made in regard to BY (or at least appears in a discussion of it on the BY extras).

Not that Grizzly is a particular non-mediocre movie, though. BUT it does hold a special place of prominence in my cinematic encounters as the first movie I can remember seeing, when a babysitter watched it on TV when I was about 3 or 4. It left quite an impression, so who knows, maybe it's to blame for my lifelong trash-culture affinities.

I just saw
Sweeney Todd
with my co-worker. Her response afterward: "Well...that was really bloody."
Five minutes later, again: "Uh, it was...really bloody."
...really?

Also although one of my resolutions was to be less of a hater this year, Harmony Korine is a no-talent hack

What's more amusing is that Korine resolved to be less of a boring pretentious wank

man you couldnt be farther off with that. you want the movie version of a power metal album see stardust or lotr. sweeney todd was more the movie version of something really bad that came out on metropolis in the mid 90s.

I'm with whit on this one. Hate Korine (and Gallo) as a person, or whatever persona he's offering up at the moment, respect his films.
Saw
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
last night, and it's commendable for the camera work alone, which is first person for a good majority of the film, going as far as to emulate both the blinking Bauby used to communicate as well as his eye getting sewn shut. It's goddamn intense.
Also, anytime Max von Sydow appeared in the film I wept a little. Great performance.

haha ok i stand corrected. by the way i did see both stardust and lotr, and can see your point with both of them, though much more with the battle scenes in return of the king than anything in stardust.

I love how Bronson just whips out his elephant gun and caps motherfuckers in the middle of the street.

honestly as I was making that post I was trying to think of a way of saying that where it didn't sound like masturbation and I just gave up.
