nothin' I'm just naturally skeptical of big budget super-effects movies. But I shouldn't hate until I check it out for myself.
I'm spending the evening watching movies on skeezy streaming video sites. I just watched the simpsons movie, before that I watched i am legend which was hilarious. Now I think I'll watch live free or die hard.
They've also got juno and a few other big new movies, but I'm not in the mood.

word to the wise though, dont sit too close or you will get really sick really fast. or a splitting headache.
agree with this utterly. best monster movie ever made.

I just watched
Meet the Feebles
. I thought it would be grosser, actually, but there were some really awesome bits. I slightly prefer
Braindead
, haven't seen
Bad Taste
yet.

john mccain was pretty good in it though
best part of the movie: (honestly not haha) was the manly grunt after the lady blew up in the elevator

holy christ atonement is boring
I mean I like extended shots of Keira Knightley lounging around in vintage clothes as much as the next man but jesus

Maybe Atonement is amazing, but it sure as hell looks like one of those English Patient-type movies that are conceived and manufactured solely with the intent of winning Oscars. I like movies to be Oscar-worthy
incidentally
, not on purpose.

Well, that and add in some lame pomo shenanigans (which you'll be prepared for if you've read the book).
I don't have a problem with the weepy Oscar epic in general, but that sort of thing lives and dies on how well it establishes character, and all Atonement bothers to do is establish that its characters are pretty.

I misread that as porno shenanigans and almost got excited about Atonement for the first time ever.

I don't know, man. The Keira K. Hotness Handicap nudges shitty movies up a couple extra stars for me i.e. I enjoyed Domino and The Jacket way more than I reasonably should have.

Spectacle's a good word for it. I'm usually not into movies edited to look like MTV on cocaine but it kind of fit thematically.

i had this same reaction to promos of "charlie wilson's war". it's more the "saving private ryan" brand of oscar-pleaser, but still, i was a bit disgruntled by it. however, i hear it's actually really good.

Yeah CWW is absolutely nothing like Saving Private Ryan, I dunno where you got that. Mike Nichols couldn't direct a war scene if it was taking place in and around a tree house.
Atonement was alright, i guess. Pretty boring, manipulative, etc; all those things we except English Patient-esque (and the English Patient itself, actually) to be. At least I didn't pay to see it.

oh, oscar loves grand-statement war movies of all stripes. i didn't really mean that it was all that much like saving private ryan, just that it would make oscar people happy for the same reasons.

I guess so. I'd be hard pressed to name two different war movies with less in common, though. CWW is pure fluff.

Glad you liked
La chatte à deux têtes
, a-d-f! It did get a little boring at times, but watching it in a theater made it easier to focus, I guess.
I am making good my promise to watch more movies again this year, it seems - recently:
in theaters
-
Lust, Caution
, Ang Lee's latest - really enjoyed it, with stellar performances from Tony Leung (shock!) and his fellow lead Tang Wei
- Tarkovski's
Nostalghia
, preceded by a short introduction from Tarkovski's son (I have no idea what he does apart from going around repping for his father's work, and I'm curious). The fact that I had this urgent need to go to the bathroom during about an hour which could only be fulfilled during a god-sent technical interruption, that the audio quality of the copy was rather dire and that I really don't relate to a lot of his late mystical preoccupations made this less enjoyable than it could have been, but there were still big chunks of visual awesomeness/pure poetry to be found, so it's all good.
- Abdellatif Kechiche's
La Graine et le Mulet
is the best French film I've seen in years, combining stellar use of dialogue, fantastic acting and extraordinary mastery of rhythm over extremely drawn-out scenes. The last hour of the movie was simply jaw-dropping.
at home:
- Costa-Gavras's
Le Couperet
(
The Axe
) - rather classy little dark comedy with the often excellent Jose Garcia
-
Microcosmos
- Quentin Dupieux's
Steak
- an oddball comedy starring Eric & Ramzy, a duet of popular comedians who usually do far more conventional stuff, could have been interesting but did not quite work - it was in fact a rather terrible bore.
-
The Star
by Stuart Heisler with Bette Davis
-
Ce jour-là
by Raoul Ruiz
- Cukor's excellent
Gaslight
with Ingrid Bergman, Charles Boyer and Joseph Cotten.
and finally just a few minutes ago, I finished
The Hit
, a somewhat odd and extremely compelling suspense by Stephen Frears.

Watched 3:10 to Yuma last night. My friend lent us the DVD, and we watched it right away, because everyone I know has been talking it up forever. The most interesting part was "Oh, hey, is that Luke Wilson?" "No, I don't... maybe?" "Yea, yea, that is Luke Wilson!" "Nice cameo, Luke!"
Tio paraphrase: we found it fairly dull.
