It wasn't
"totally random," though -- Kenard (as in canard, as in lie!) was the only person who claimed to be unafraid of Omar last episode... and this week he was the only cat-torturer not to bolt. He's been established as bark
and
bite -- think of when he took over Namond's stash, etc.

Random is the wrong word, really. "Insignificant" is closer to the mark.
Plus while you've got a point about Kenard, it's not like this has been building up for a while or anything. Not like with Michael and Omar. So it's random enough for me.

Well, you're right, but
I find how it happened both upsetting and satisfying. I think the fallout might actually be stranger this way... the look on Chris's face suggested something -- disappointment that Omar's gone? That he has to go back to regular killing? Not sure. And clearly Snoop has something going on, the way she's getting huffy about Junebug -- had Michael offed Omar, he might as well be Marlo's heir apparent, but as it is Snoop remains top muscle.
I guess I said "holy fuck" because I watched the entire first bit of the episode in absolute dread, knowing it'd happen soon enough, and then the dread lingered -- I thought for sure Sydnor would get killed in the scene when he's figuring out the clock code -- just absolutely nerve-wracking.

Oh shit
Someone on two of the Wire-centric blogs I read pointed this out: the kid who in season three says "it's MY turn to be Omar" is... Kenard. It's been confirmed by Simon. Check it:

Generally they don't give away any spoilers in those promo spots. I mean, if we actually watched the Wire on HBO we all woulda seen it. And they don't give away anything *for sure* but if you watch the show at all carefully it's pretty obvious. That doesn't stop half the youtube commentators from being wrong, but that's not news.

Well, given what he says beforehand, it's almost certainly
Chris, but there's an off-chance it could be Snoop or even Marlo, or hell, more than one of them
The way they cut from the closeup to the outside shot, though, that might not even be the same scene; they could be fucking with us.

Does anyone know around what time in the evening the new episode goes up OnDemand? It'd be great if we could catch it before this Oscar party.

From what I've read it usually goes up Mon. morning sometime, varying wildly depending what market you're in.

huh. Maybe then. The TWOP people talk like they show up on On Demand 8 or 9 the next morning. And there was one ep that didn't show up until like noon and they were all freaking out.

So I'm finally posting here, as I finally watched the last 14 or so minutes of the episode. (The file went bad with Sydnor in the car, so my feeling of dread was stretched over several days!) I'm definitely of the mind--in retrospect, anyway--that this is the only way things coulda gone down with Omar. The fact that it was Kanard gave it some kind of significance, but ultimately, it's the insignificance that matters--Gus's decision to not run the story about, essentially, just another black male dying a violent death in the inner city--really hammers this home. This handled any other way woulda been total bullshit.
I was pretty surprised that McNulty came clean to Beadie, and I definitely think he's going down for this. (I don't think he's going to end up dead, though. I really can't envision a way for that to happen that wouldn't be totally lame.) I'm a little worried about what's going on between Lester and Clay Davis, though my guess is that he's setting him up somehow.
As far as the preview for Episode 9, Marlo's in the box, isn't he?

yeah, that's what brandon and i thought.
which, yeah, we watched the episode last night, and yeah, holy fuck. since the new episodes hit ondemand on mondays and we usually watch them on sundays, we've agreed that we're both gonna watch episode 9 when it hits ondemand tonight, and then we'll meet up next week to watch the last episode. hah, we're making plans around watching a tv show.

well, clay doesn't know that lester already ran the idea of prosecuting clay past federal attorneys and got it shot down, so clay is in a position where he'll want to play ball with lester in order to keep lester from taking his info to those attorneys (because to clay's mind, there's no reason why they wouldn't move on him--after all, it's only not happening because of interdepartmental beefs). so i guess lester's thinking he'll get info from clay that will allow him to go after people even further up the ladder, or alternately go after marlo? i'm not sure, but he wants to get SOME info from clay.

Yeah, Marlo's in the box.
My predictions: Chris is either killed during the raid, or is arrested and put under permanent lock and key pending trial on Bunk's murder. Marlo gets brought in, brought up on some lesser charge, and is either released, or is still being held at the show's end, but will probably not get put away for long. Either way, his organization is shattered. Michael will kill Snoop--she wasn't in the clips in the trailer immediately preceding the raid, but Chris was, leading me to believe that maybe she got missed during that sweep.
The impetus for Michael killing Snoop (and this is D's idea, not mine, so credit where credit's due): Snoop and Chris come back on Michael's moms for telling tales to Bunk. Michael, for all his posturing, is hit pretty hard by this, and decides it's time to put Snoop away for good. Maybe this is a stretch, but I thought it was an interesting theory.
Anyway, one of y'all could do me a favor and holler when it comes up (if it comes up) this evening, because I'll be at the computer lab and can't download from there. Have to hoof it back home and set it up to d/l and then get back to studying.
Peace!

I think that makes a lot of sense, but you just never know with this show. Another interesting theory I've heard bandied about is that Chris gets killed in that raid (McNulty looks like he's leaning over a body in that one scene), and Marlo sends Michael and Snoop after Chris' family (why the hell else would they have been introduced into the plot that late?) as part of his customary Stalinist cleanup bullshit, and this is what causes Michael to go off the reservation.
