Yes! the scary door! Genius.
I HAVE to stop reading this thread, its making me very frustrated that everywhere I look people are enjoying John's Book but me.

Ooh, I know! I'll make a request that the public library buy it! Thats the plan, and will spread the gospel too, because then I can bug people to go and get it out.

Which one had a brain?  Are they both brains?  I don't remember which cartoon I was watching!

Just got back from the Strand, with said book. Just took me two pages of thread to get it done.

I also bought my copy from the Strand last night.  Barnes and Noble still doesn't have it in yet.  I'm excited to read it, but I gotta finish some Arthur Conan Doyle first.

No hijack, but has anyone read Drew Daniel's 20 Jazz Funk Greats? It's pretty much the best 33 1/3 book that I've read to date (of 15 or so). It's the perfect blend of autobiography, actual interview with the people that made the record, greil marcus grad school analysis, and raw 14-year-old enthusiasm.

I totally misread this and thought there was a 33 1/3 book out on an Arthur Doyle album.

WHICH I WOULD BUY IN A HEARTBEAT IN CASE ANYONE CARES TO WRITE ONE.

Just got Master Of Reality in the mail today and can't stop reading even though I shouldn't a) I bought it as a gift b) I have a ton of other things I need to be doing.

I can't even relate to Roger as concretely as some of you have because I was/am totally the opposite of this.  I was a totally naive square nerdy follow the rules type of girl.  Yet I can relate on a basic level to a sense of overall injustice and anger and how music made me able to concentrate this feeling onto something real- or at least recognize that these feelings were valid.  I'm going to go try to put this into the review section on amazon even though I don't really know what I'm saying and I'm no where near as eloquent or interesting as anyone on this message board.

Got mine in the mail today, along with the CD. I really wanna read it right now, but I promised myself I'd listen to the album first, so I'm doing that now.

Jeb's and Citrus's comments really made me want to read it, but I didn't read Andrew's because I didn't want anymore spoilers.

I finally received a shipping information for mine (I'd placed my order over a week ago,  but it took them a week to arrange payment via paypal), but apparently I accidentally chose for the Int. Surface Mail option, so it'll be a while before I get to read the thing.

I did, however, check out the album to prepare myself for the reading a little while ago (I'd never really listened to Black Sabbath before at all), and was pleasantly surprised to find just how much I'm liking it. So, thanks for the trigger, John.

Man, I keep reading this thread full of people who've never listened to Sabbath, and I'm thinking, 'man, you guys are getting so much more than you thought you had coming'.

I think I'll put on Master of Reality right now, in fact.

Yeah it kind of blindsided me.

edit: As in, it's not what I expected at all, sound-wise. To be completely honest, all I had heard and knew for sure was Black Sabbath was Iron Man. I think I make too many assumptions about music I haven't heard.

The other ones are also, you know, life-alteringly great. Of the first six or so albums, I mean.

It's just that Master of Reality is easily my favourite. It presses all my buttons, what can I say?

No doubt, but they didn't have the self-titled one either, which was gonna be my next choice.

For the record, i have heard Black Sabbath before. I have loved them ever since I can remember.

Just felt I should clear that up in case anyone thought otherwise...

I have to say, I think you've got your priorities right. My list is:
1) MoR
2) Black Sabbath
3) Paranoid
4) All the others.

personally i have to rep for "sabotage". i was dj-ing last night, filling in for my friend eric while he's in europe, and i totally played "symptom of the universe". that song is so outstanding. i decided to fade out the pretty part at the end though. sometimes when dj-ing one feels the need to make choices like that to keep the party going, as it were. i was torn about it though.

by the way, i'm not saying "sabotage" is the best of the first 6 albums by any means--i'm just saying that i have an unusual/disproportionate love for it. my favorite of those sabbath records is probably "paranoid".
