hello there, Murk. [uh, on the previous page now]

also, when is someone else going to put a review on Amazon?  mine is sitting there all lonely and badly written and full of typos I can't figure out how to fix.  damn it people, get to it already.

I posted a slightly edited version of what I posted here and it was deleted. I've been meaning to write a new one, but I am a lazybones.

Hey, so I just read this today, and my god it is good.  I guess I'll see if I can work up something coherent as an Amazon sales pitch.

ok, i feel bad enough about miles being the only one that i will try to figure out amazon reviews and post one. maybe i'll just cut/paste my goodreads review (there are a whole bunch of thoughtful reviews over at that site, by the way).

also, john, i was way into the powell's entries, especially the one about "the headless children". i had that album when i was in high school and probably haven't heard it since 1992 or so, but i do remember loving it and yet also being kind of perplexed by some of the abrupt shifts in tone, as between a serious song like "the headless children" and a song or two later "mean [motherfuckin] man". and blackie lawless always howled like crazy, no matter how important a subject he was trying to talk about. but for whatever reason, maybe just because i was 14 and angst-ridden, that record really connected with me. i fully plan to hunt down my dubbed cassette copy of it when i get home from work today. maybe it'll actually still play.

also, you've made me want to finally give mercyful fate and sabbath's "born again" album (which i've only heard two songs from ever) a real shot, finally. i've been on the fence about king diamond for years and years, because i could just never take his vocals seriously, but i always sorta wished i could, because i liked the riffs a lot. i think i need to finally get over the falsetto-phobia.

Loving King Diamond is like one of life's great testaments to the virtues of hard work.  For some, you know, it comes easy.  It took me a couple months with Oath before I fell head over heals.

p.s. a live performance was also great encouragement.  His theatrics are unparalleled so far, in my concert going experience in terms of raw emotion...not so much grandeur.

Yeah I was wondering if those were going to come up. I really liked the one about The Headless Children. I will have to check it out, I need more apocalyptic grandeur in my life.

Another thread title that looks lovely on the front page btw, "my black sabbath boo..." It sounds so wistful.

Sounds like an alternate title for "Young Goodman Brown."

Man, without really going into why, this book makes me feel a really excellent mix of emotions inside.  I thank you a lot John, for putting in the effort and riding the emotional rollercoaster to make this... feeling this book wash through my head this week will make my shitty job go by easier and help my demeanor every time I think about it.  It's a great read, and extremely powerful, and it's really touched me and I'm really glad you wrote it and shared it and I wish I could say something deeper right here about it and explain its personal significance to me but it's the internet and everything and so I'll just say thank the fucking stars that there's a fucking dude like you out there to ensure us joe schmos--who really have nothing BUT shitty forklift-drivin jobs and music and seemingly constant streams of ominous thoughts--that we may very well be fucked up but what the hell does that matter and besides, experiencing that full spectrum of emotion in our lives and feeling the stark contrasts and comparisons throughout is way better than being a fat jolly rich guy with nice clothes, a boat, and maybe a friend or two but no buddies.

Yeah I'm not sayin' that driving the forklift is shitty.  Morning prep at a restaurant isn't particularly shitty.  They're just shitty jobs.

I know what you're sayin' though.  If I didn't have a forklift to drive around and run shit over with at work I'd probably just call the whole thing quits and bury myself in the box crusher.

Ah, the box crusher!  Like so many other things at my work I am the only one who knows how to work it so when it gets messed up they call me back and I fiddle with it and a crowd gathers, like ape-men round the monolith.  Then instead of also sprach zarathustra, the moment of revelation is accompanied by 'WRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEAW'

I'm pretty sure I was the only one at the grocery store I used to work at that actually knew how to operate the box crusher. It was annoying. I threw rotten produce in there a lot though.

I was one of the dumbfucks that didn't know how to operate anything and just threw objects where they told me

And the objects were crushed
