I hate to interrupt the discussion about marketing but I just wanted to say that I got my copy from Amazon in the mail today and read it all in one go. I can't speak more eloquently about it than previous people in this thread have already done but suffice it to say I have never cried that much reading any book since I was a child. You've given voice to something that I have been trying to say for years and years and I can't even express how much that means to me at this point in my life. I want to show it to everyone in my life, especially my family, and make them read it, multiple times if necessary, no matter how they feel about the music. I would say more but I don't think I'm ready to bare so much of myself in a public forum. Thank you seems like the wrong thing to say for something like this but it's the only thing I can say. Even clicking the post button has taken me 5 minutes to work up the bravery to do. I'll just do it with my eyes closed.

man thank you for this.

I let/made my friend who grew up in this area read it last night and she kept saying things like "I've been there! I know where that place is! I have a friend who went to that psych facility (if you changed the name) for 6 months! He has to read this! I know those freeways by heart! I used to rifle through used music at Rhino looking for punk albums! That's my high school! You do take US History junior year!".

She loved the book/was destroyed by it too and is going to buy it. I'm spreading the gospel.  Heart

My copy should be coming in tomorrow.  I got it for my step dad because black sabbath is his favorite band and he reads constantly.  I was planning to read it before I gave it to him but it sounds so good I'll probably buy one for myself too.  This has also opened my eyes to this 33 1/3 series, which I had noticed was mentioned on lptj but didn't check it out until ordering this book.

Yeah I'm trying to figure out how to write a review without getting too personal, but don't worry, it's coming.

Also yeah I just ordered 3 more books in the series (the Neutral Milk Hotel one, the Belle and Sebastian one, and OK Computer). I need to stop spending money.

I like that you guys have read some of them already.  I was about to buy my roommate the meat is murder one til I read that Joe Pernice only mentions the album in passing.  I read the first few pages of it on the preview and would have been disappointed had I found that out myself or had my roommate throw it back at me in anger with pee dripping off it.

i don't use the amazon review function (maybe i should do so just this once) but for the record i posted a review on the goodreads.com page for "master of reality", and EVERY SINGLE REVIEW on that page was a gushing 5 star review. including mine of course. so there's that.

I don't know; I think it's devoid of any real insight, the writing style is tepid at best. I mean obviously YMMV, but I didn't learn anything I couldn't find somewhere on the web or in band interviews.

Oh, I found you.

wow I didn't know there was a social network for reading that's cool!  I need to start reading more regularly to do this.  Hopefully no more school will up my literary awareness quite a bit.  I've been reading the introduction to The Idiot for two weeks now, there's just no time!

oh goodness this reminded me of that twilight zone ep which was then a family guy thing or something where the guy is trapped in a brain with all these books and he breaks his glasses?  And he goes "THERE WAS TIME NOW" or something..... funnnny...maybe not.

oh, richard matheson wrote that twilight zone episode, and burgess meredith starred as the guy. he liked to take his lunch break in the bank vault, but while he was in the vault one day he fell asleep and there was some kind of nuclear holocaust that wiped out everyone but left all the buildings standing, and the air was fine, and etc. dude was always bumming that he didn't have time to read, and since there were no more people, he would finally have the time to read all the books he wanted to get to but never could. but as soon as he gets to the library, he breaks his glasses.

oh, you know that girl? her review was amazing. it was one of those things where you're reading someone else's review and you're like "god, this makes my review totally obsolete, because it says all the stuff i said about 10 times as well."

The Futurama parody of this was much, much better than the Family Guy one.
