Damn. When I got into Black Sabbath I bought all the quasi-bootleg cassettes of the early records that sounded terrible but were a lot cheaper than the Warner issues of the same albums, and seriously, that's the only way to get into Black Sabbath. When you're 13 and you're buying a new Black Sabbath album once a week because it's the only thing your allowance can pay for, life is good. Even though you have to turn your Walkman all the way up to get them as loud as all your other tapes are with your Walkman turned halfway up.

Shit, so I thought I posted about this already, but apparently that was in an alternate universe LPTJ where I actually pimp what I write and don't merely give it an awkward glance and softly shuffle my feet away from it.

Anyway, after I read the book, I wrote this, which is less of a review and more of an essay on all the shit the book unearthed.  Very cathartic.  Thank you, John.

EDIT: Rereading it, boy, half of it don't make sense, but I ain't much of an editor once I got something out of the can, so.

I read this and I liked it a lot. Nearly finished it on the train ride home.

I would like it very much if some clear-eyed high-school teacher assigned this book, damn the consequences.

A friend of mine professes popular music (in?) education at Boston University, where I guess a large chunk of her students are highschool, etc., music teachers doing professional development stuff. I gave her a copy of the book for her plane ride back to Boston last weekend. If she likes it maybe it might trickle down to a highschool teacher or two. In which case I will have done my part.

I also engaged in a rigorous study of philosophy and religion...but cheerfulness kept creeping in.

I bought a copy of this a few weeks ago when i was in northampton for the Mogwai show (can't recall the store name but it was a cool shop and they had a ton of the 33 1/3rd titles) and i finally remembered to dig it out of my camera bag yesterday.

incredible read.  John really nailed it, and it was an extremely powerful book.  i told my wife she should have it as the book for her book club.
