D is an intelligent girl and thus has never watched an episode to my knowledge.

That's not what he was saying, Miles.

I watched the first two seasons of the O.C. in about a 72 hour period.  Then I tried (and failed) to watch season 3.

I must admit, I enjoyed it a little.  Especially since soaps are supposed to be ridiculous.

Yeah well I'm not actually as indignant as I'm putting on, but it does seem to appeal to a certain subset of the population whose intelligence is well, um, suspect. But really those clips theblucas posted are goddamned ridiculous, I'm guessing even with context

Yeah, see, the thing is, the first and (especially) the fourth seasons are really great, but 2 and 3 are among the stupidest things I've ever seen.  Like, I've sat through some shitty TV in my day, but even I couldn't sit through S3 of the The OC.

eh, S1 was just silly and funny and soapy.  I don't really remember it that well; I'd have to go back and watch it (which might actually happen thanks to the bloody strike).  IIRC, a lot of its popularity had to do with it airing during the summer, where a scripted show of even questionable quality can do really well.

But S4 I recommend wholeheartedly.  It was like a different show.  They basically got rid of a half-dozen or so really annoying soap actors and upped the parts for a couple excellent comic ones, and gave up most of the pretense of being a teen soap in favor of just being a teen comedy.  Oddly enough, I think this was the season where Schwartz took a step back and wasn't involved as much; so your thesis holds.

And see I would bring up Gossip Girl here but

1. I think I am the only one here who seriously watches it and that says a lot about my general hermitness of the last several months as well as the fact that I am a grown ass lady watching a show called Gossip Girl and regardless of the camp factor and the fact that I am backed by the Go Fug Yourself writers in my love for it neither of those things are good things to say about me
2. If I recall correctly the last time someone brought up that show it turned into full-scale internet class war

so, yeah.

I stopped watching (and 90% of the rest of TV when I split up with my ex-lady) it but it was good while it lasted.

House.
I finally saw a couple episodes.  It's pretty good.

I'm living in a house with a real tv now, so I'm seeing a lot of things.  What I most dread is my roommates love for American Idol.  Also, I don't get all this MMA stuff.  Great, they know how to fight really well.  But you're still watching two people beat the shit out of each other.  Not my cup of tea.  But I've been watching as much Monk as possible, and I love that show.

Can we pause to sing the praises of cable?

In the past two hours, I've seen:

-A woman get a new body through a stomach staple and plastic surgery
-TRUE LIFE: I'm a miss _____ contestant!/I'm a teenage bodybuilder!
-The intestines of Julian Noble
-Power Rangers
-Andy Griffith
-Conan's Beard
-Playboy bunnies

I saw an episode of Life on Mars last night and at the end I was like "wait a minute... that guy's from the FUTURE!"
A bit slow on the take, but then I was watching Life on Mars.

I've been watching Ally McBeal. I remember this show completely falling apart by the end of the run, but the first season is pretty good.

Huh.  I loved the first season or two back in tha day, but I've always kind of wondered how it would hold up now, especially since I pretty much hate everything else David E. Kelley has done with a violent passion.  And so many of the actors have made me hate them since.  Oh well, another one to put on the "rewatch while the strike is on" list.

FWIW I remember a really, really hard fall-off in quality.  Like, the "jump the shark" thing is a cliche, but you can almost pinpoint the episode where it goes from "good show" to "take me now God."

edit:  it's probably the lesbian kiss episode.  god, what pandering bullshit that was.

I just remember that I went from trying to remember to watch it to not even noticing when the series ended. All five seasons are, um, available.

I finished Mad Men last night. It definitely improved, but with its improvements came a lot of lousiness. Like, when it's good it's pretty great -- and when it's bad it's just straight-out corny, even embarrassing. And I think John Slattery was miscast; he's a guy who looks anachronistic now, and so he works certainly as an image, but his voice just isn't right. It takes away what presence he does have -- and he can't do anything when he shares the frame with Christina Hendricks, who is all charisma, simply great. I'd compare my experience watching him roughly to an experience I had during There Will Be Blood -- the Standard Oil man's voice was all wrong, his diction -- it didn't have the cliched old-timey rhythm. Threw me out of it.

spoilerish??
I actually thought that the incongruity of that character helped to show just how completely gone Plainview really was.  dude could barely even have a conversation without threating to kill this guy.  until that point of the movie you only had Plainview's perspective, so when that scene came on you kinda get to see him from their eyes and how twisted he really is.  so it did kind of 'throw me out of it' too, but i think in an effective way.

i really need to watch that movie again

re: madmen.  god damn i can't stand that show
