So I went and drank Hopslam from draft.  It was better.

Rogue Charlie 1981 tasted like the way summertime feels.

Oh wow, missed that one. It is motherfucking excellent, isn't it? I think it's got less of that like caustic edge it does in the bottle. Just pure flavor.

And you know Rogue is probably (along with Bell's) one of my favorite breweries in the nation. I had a glass of Brutal Bitter with dinner last night, actually. What's Charlie 1981 and can I conceivably lay hands on some?

It's an American style strong ale, limited release, came out in January.  It's named after Charles Papazian, who wrote The Complete Joy of Homebrewing, and whose book inspired the founders of Rogue to, well, found Rogue.

It tastes like summer evenings.  Seriously.

A friend gave me a bottle of Southern Comfort as her contribution to general festivities.  I have no idea what to do with it - it's SO SWEET.  Absurdly, shockingly, offensively sweet.  Anyone know something I can make with it as would make it less frightening to my tastebuds?

It doesn't really reduce the sweetness, but Soco/Dr. Pepper always did me right.

My former roommates and I once concocted a drink that was half SoCo and half Black 100 with a splash of Dr. Pepper. I don't remember if it was sweet or not, because we were drinking pints of it.

Try adding a couple dashes of bitters. Those tend to turn down the nasty sweetness of things.

I'm seriously considering moving back to liquor as a way to cut a bit of the old calorie intake. I've been trying to eat better lately, but having some grilled fish & greens and washing it down with three or four oat sodas is kind of counter productive.

It's counterintuitive, but actually a shot of liquor and a beer have roughly the same amount of calories.

You're talking like lager beer, though, right? Cause I'm more of the porter/stout/IPA/barley wine/Belgian-style persuasion.

And you know, as I read that I realized that I'd heard that before, and it just seems so... wrong! I dunno. How can a little 1oz swig of liquor have as many calories as a 12oz beer?

Also have to take into account that I usually drink pints, and that to get drunk I'll need to drink like seven or eight pints, whereas after four or five cocktails, I'm pretty good.

Your stout might have like, 10 more calories than a shot of whiskey.  And if you're using any mixers, forget it.

If you really want to drink healthier, then wine is definitely your best bet.  But who wants to be that guy?

The hard stuff: The calories in gin, rum, vodka or whiskey depends on the proof, which is twice the percentage of alcohol. For example, 90 proof vodka contains 45 per cent alcohol; 100 proof contains 50 per cent alcohol. And it’s easy to guess which has more calories: The higher the proof, the higher the calories. Here’s the damage:

    * Double shot 80 proof contains 97 calories
    * Double shot 90 proof contains 110 calories
    * Double shot 100 proof contains 124 calories

Calorie content of other types of liquor varies greatly. Watch the really sweet stuff, though. A serving of schnapps has 108 calories, and crème de menthe will set you back 186 calories.

Beer: Non-alcoholic beer actually has the same calories as alcoholic beer: 148 calories in a pint. If you drink a light beer – like Bud Light – you’ll only take in around 99 calories per pint.

so really, it seems that a double shot = 1 light beer. not quite as bad as 1 shot = 1 beer, but not exactly great.

Speaking of Rogue, dudes, Edgewater Lounge here in my neck of the woods (-ish) is maybe as good a place as you can find in Illinois to drink Rogue beers.  The owner is tight with Rogue's brewmaster, held his wedding in the Rogue brewery & shit.  They have a tap dedicated to "John's Locker Stock" brews (of which that Charlie is one, so I better get over there and check it out while I can, if they're still tapping it) which are short-lived experimental batches the brewer does.  They also have a hand-pull and usually have a couple of firkins of whatever the dude from Rogue decides to send them.

Oh man, at Brews! I love that place (and I guess it's obvious why). Granville is a neat little town, I used to date a girl went to Denison (the alma mater of James Frey--part of his fantastical bullshit, I believe the part in which he slugged a cop, was supposed to have taken place in that town).

Tangential rant: in my JCOMP course, people were still listing 'A Million Little Pieces' as their favorite recent book. WTF kids?
