I've had 3 Left Hand Milk Stouts, recommended to me (indirectly) by our own elpollodiablo.  Damn fine beer.  Drinking my last Two Brothers Cane and Ebel now, which I know Lucy will back me up on.  Fucking solid beer.

I have probably told the story before of the first time I tried it.  It was the summer before I moved to Chicago and I stopped at the Map Room for a couple after a day of interviewing.  I must have spent too long looking at the beer menu 'cause the bartender asked me what I was looking for.  I told him I wanted to try something I hadn't had before.  He poured me 2 little samples.

The first taste was of a simple golden lager, probably a good summer beer but not exceptional and not really what I wanted.  I let him know that and tried the second sample.  Wow.  Just the aroma was unexpected, hoppy certainly, but with a spicy-sweet component that was unfamiliar.  I tasted it.  I'd never tasted anything like it.  I looked at the bartender.  He made a circular gesture with his hand, as it wafting fumes toward his nose.  "Do you get... cat piss?" he asked.  I laughed.  Cat piss?  Don't know.  If so, only in the best way possible.

Cane and Ebel is a "hopped-up red rye ale."  It's brewed with rye in the mash, obviously, but also Thai palm sugar, which interacts with the spiciness of the rye and the high-alpha hop variety they use to create something unique.

Get your bitch asses to Chicago and drink some with me.

After this, I have 2 Goose Island Bourbon County Stouts in the fridge.  If I can last through those, the only beer left is the stuff Mindy bought at Aldi which is basically all Heineken and Becks clones.  blech.  Guess it's whiskey time at that point.

I, on the other hand, only have 6 Old Style tallboys.

Wait that's good.

How are those GI stouts Jim?  I've only ever had the Oatmeal Stouts, and they were far and away my favorite GI beer.

you know how sometimes people erroneously describe something like guinness as "thick" and you have to explain to them that no, in fact, guinness is lighter than most beers, that's why it floats in a black and tan, so don't order it just so you can pretend you know beer, just get the damn budweiser that you know you want you ignorant shit.

this is a different beast entirely.  you could float marbles on the stuff.  viscous doesn't cover it.  big alcohol but plenty of flavor to make you forget it's there, at least until you try to stand up.  vanilla from the bourbon barrel, roasted coffee with a chocolatey sweetness from the dark malts but a good hop bite to balance it. molasses.  i haven't even opened one yet tonight but i can practically taste it already.  definitely a sipping beer.  i'll report back with further impressions if the mood strikes.

1) I am so onboard with this cat piss beer.
2) I'm working on getting to Chicago. Hopefully permanently.

Sweet!

OT, drinking Pernod tonight.  Started late.  Not feeling well, may only get this first one down.  Mindy has me signed up to do too much shit tomorrow.  Though maybe I can play the sick card to stay home and play Xbox all day.

Fucking hell guys I'm out of whiskey.  I need to replace it, preferably with something I haven't had before.

I'm considering Buffalo Trace, Jameson, Sazerac Rye, Bulleit bourbon...

I had a somewhat awful evening at a pretty great beer pub last week, so I went there again this weekend in better company and it was awesome. The guy who co-runs the place is perhaps a little bit less witty than he'd like to think, but he makes up for that by making beer suggestions on the basis of what you tell them about your taste/cravings (and by being nonetheless very entertaining and friendly). I had a pretty good run yesterday: started out with a Gouden Carolus Triple (which the other co-owner suggested to me after I had requested something along the lines of the Sint Bernardus Triple I had had the other week), then moved on to a Guldenberg (the witty guy's recommendation when I asked for something a little less sweet), and finished the evening with a Piraat, mostly because pirates are awesome, so beers named after them must be too. Needless to say, that logic did not steer me wrong.

Also, a place that serves free peanuts still in their shells with the explicit instruction of throwing the shells on the floor can't be such a bad place to spend an evening, right?

Yeah, I think I'm going to get some Jameson and read Joyce...

Yojimbo - Care to elaborate any?  I've seen Bulleit recommended in a number of places, but I'm really just playing the field at present

Bulliet costs about as much as Knob Creek (my mid-range of choice) and tastes worse than Elijah Craig (my cheaper bourbon of choice).

unnecessarily harsh without much complexity backing it up.   They say it's aged at least 6 years but it doesn't taste like it.  Gimmicky bottle--seemingly marketed toward fans of Westerns.  Drink this hyar whiskey, it's a MAN'S drink.

my buddy who I brew with has a bottle of it.  When he ran out of vodka, I started rinsing out my mouth with Bulleit before starting a siphon.  It does appear to be sanitary, I'll give it that.  Would fit right in to any frontier surgeon's kit.
