I ended up getting pretty drunk tonight actually

Josho is SXSW really like a magical place with open bars and nachos

Kind of. It's a complete clusterfuck for one thing. Senseless hipster carnage. It can be a crapshoot sometimes. Some bars will have free beer, but it's a "while supplies last" sort of thing, and it's only PBR tallboys or something, and they're out by the time the 2nd band finishes playing at 1:30 PM. But sometimes it's better than that too. There's less free food than there is free beer, and in the case of the nachos it was just basic chips, salsa, queso, and guac, which was great and all, but does not a meal make, and there are a number of ice cream vendors giving out complimentary ice cream sandwiches too. Last year we did find some place that had free bbq beef sandwiches, potato salad and beans, which was wonderful, but I didn't find anything like that this year. This is mostly during the daytime stuff too. During the day, the shows and stuff are pretty much all free, but at night when the "official showcases" start, then you have to pay to get in (unless you have  a badge or wristband), and there aren't nearly as many booze/food specials. I pretty much lucked out on Thursday and found some nighttime party with free whiskey-gingerale and then on Friday when the people I stayed with hosted a show at their house and provided a keg. Other than those things the free stuff at night was pretty sparse.

That cat seems resentful.

Antero's experiments in alcohol:

Okay so I figured brown sugar is pretty tasty so why not make it into simple syrup?  That seems like an excellent idea!  And it seems like that would go well with whiskey.  Answer:  Yes.  So here's what I just did.

2 oz. Jameson Irish Whiskey
1/4 oz. brown sugar simple syrup - just a tiny hit, really.  1 part brown sugar, 1 part water, boil it, mix it, bottle it, chill it, you should know the routine.
1 or 2 dashes Angostura bitters - for complexity and shit
1 tsp. egg white

Shake everything without ice to emulsify the egg white, add ice, shake again, serve, fuck a garnish.

You can chug this and not even flinch.  Holy fuck.  It hit me sometime during this post.

I need a name for it

I guess if I was an actual bartender I'd say something like "garnish with a flamed orange peel" which would actually be pretty good, a little citrus would be a nice touch to the flavor profile, but I'm not an actual bartender and I kind of accidentally got myself fucked up during the course of writing this post.  The only reason it's not rife with spelling errors is the spellchecker in firefox and my own OCD tendencies.

Hmmmm... Antero man that sounds alright. I am going to mix me one up here... tho subbing orange bitters cause they are:

A) hell of delicious
&
B) proximity, man!

Orange bitters could actually be aiiight, though angostura bitters have that whole aromatic thing going on... maybe I should try both at once

An actual mixologist could probably get this spec'ed better than I

ok man this is tasty, yeah.

I am an orange bitters man all the way. Manhattan's with that shit are divine.

This may surprise some, but I've spent a relatively queit st. patrick's day evening at home. Been sick and all, and worked at the restaurant all night. Making boiled dinners and Irish egg rolls and there was some bad-ass black and tan beef stew.

The commercialization of the thing is gross, tho. All these green miller lite hats and the bar was giving away a Budweiser snowboard... dudes shooting bushmills and chasing it with Killians... that's protestant whiskey! they don't have saints! and killian's is damn from colorado!

Yay!  The approval of peers!

What sort of orange bitters are you using?  I hear Regan's are good shit...

Wow. Went by the only decent dive/rock bar in town last night, and their door was locked. I thought that was pretty fucking weird for St. Patrick's Day. Tonight, same deal. The girl working the bar next door told me that they're closed, indefinitely. Fuckin terrible. It was the best place to see live music in this town, and they had an amazingly diverse group of musicians there through the years. It's where I saw the Mountain Goats, Vanderslice, the White Stripes (waaay back in the day), the Black Keys, Elf Power, and countless local shows that were hell of fun. A toast to the Union! I'll miss your $1 PBRs and vomit-encrusted restrooms as much as anything.

I am drinking a Budweiser for really the first time ever. I had some buddies over last night and one of them left like 4 tall bottles in the fridge... I come home, I want a beer, but all I have are those Buds and a single Murphy's.
I'm thinking to myself, dog it's the beer of the proletariat, if you can't drink Bud how in fuck you going to start this revolution.

It's not half bad, I've honestly had worse. I'm no beer snob, tho... so my judgement here is... yeah.

I find it pretty fucking hard to believe you've never had a Budweiser before. I think that makes you a beer snob by definition.

You know, all taste issues aside, at 3.2-5% alcohol, Bud just does a shitty job of getting you drunk.

i discovered last night that earthfare (whole foods-ish health food store native to the southeast) has their own brand of wine at $3 a bottle. and the shit is good! it's called lost vineyards, which is cheesy, yes, but...they travel the world, i guess, looking for these forgotten, down & out wine-producing regions, and give 'em a boost or something...i don't know how they offer it so cheap, but there it is. it's good stuff, lots of exotic regions and grapes...

Alright by 'really the first time ever' I am talking, sitting down and really pondering over that glass. I've had it in passing, at bars when half-drunk, at parties when all-drunk, etc.

This is the first time I've really plumbed the depths tho, is what I am saying.

Don't make me a snob by defintion, I've just always preferred other shitty beers to this one.

Because you're very smart. (Even though you were in fucking Boston on Saturday and you didn't return jess' calls to meet up. Not that I'm bitter about it, mind you. . . )

I found a Weyerbacher Autumn something or other. It was nice.

Boston on Saturday, I was at the show, but kinda leaning against the wall with a fever of 103 and maybe seeing and hearing things that weren't factual. I wasn't even gonna go, but man I love me some Goats!

Thank the gods we didn't meet up! I looked like Boris Karloff with sideburns, I'm sure! Certainly felt it.

I'm a PBR man myself, but Schlitz and I go way back. There is a tangible SOMETHING there, like first love.

being honest, i drink PBR more often, too. i have a history with high life, but i get free PBRs at gigs in town, and they taste better cold anyway.

I'll definitely drink PBR, Old Style (when I can), and High Life before I'll drink Bud. The only time I drink that is when there's a keg and it's free.

if it's one thing i've learned as i've gotten older, though....pay the extra $3 for a decent 6-pack of beer. IT'S WORTH IT.

You're right... but being a young fool, it's hard for me to say no to cheap beer, especially when it's on SALE. Last summer this place in town had a surplus of Miller Lite, and were selling 12's for 4.99.

I bought like 6 of them, dudes I was drinking that shit for a long time. I have a picture somewhere of the fridge with 72 miller lite's in it, everywhere, like a bad commercial.

i was bemoaning the fact that i couldn't buy beer after work last sunday (damn georgia law) when a coworker of mine said that she had a hook-up at a nearby gas station. so i gave her $10 and a short list of preferences (sam adams, dos equis, or corona?) and she came back with corona LIGHT.

oh, it was hard to mask my disappointment. i am not a light beer drinker.

(turns out, corona light ain't all that bad)
