Jon, good to see you back around!

What the fuck though, homie, you paying a hundo a month for a smart phone and you don't really use the internet anymore?

Also my first iPhone had light leaks like a mother.

Considering you can still get an easy hundred out of an old 3G, I will definitely be upgrading at the end of the month.

Evo looks ballsy but battery life is apparently nonexistent

Nope.

- also supposedly some light spillage from screen since build is not apple quality, I say that with irony, but it's true.

Nope.

It's about a billion times faster than the iPhone.  If you care about looks, stick with Apple products.  If you care about features, fuck an Apple product.

I've been using an HTC phone for the best part of a year, and I have to say the quality of construction is really top-notch. I doubt the new one will be any different.

I've been pretty tempted to get an HTC phone once I'm eligible for an upgrade.  I'd like to get an iPhone, but really just so I could jailbreak the shit out of my iPod Touch and turn it into a universal garage door opener.

You could jailbreak your Touch right now!

I was pretty excited about the EVO, but since AT&T kicked up the ETF fee and offered the early upgrade, it makes since to stick with the iPhone. Plus it's convenient, I like the form factor, the app availability, etc. Definitely still curious about the EVO, but every review I've read of it has decried its battery life as just abysmal. Care to speak to that, Dave?

The abysmal battery life has not been my experience.  If you are not in an area with 4G coverage, the battery will die very rapidly if you have the 4G coverage switch turned on because the EVO will be constantly searching for signal.  Maybe that is what people are doing?

Your average user, maybe. I doubt that's the case for the guys at Giz. Though Engadget's review was more cautiously optimistic about the battery.

Would definitely be interested in playing with it. The hardware on the new iPhone, as well as the camera and processor, seem to be meaningful upgrades to me, but I'd like to see the phones in a head-to-head.

Here is one of the relevant quotes from Gizmodo

Quote
It's oddly a struggle to make the Evo last that long—on a weekend, I had to recharge by 2pm—and I had 4G turned off. Expect to plug this thing in at work before you go out at night if you want a phone that isn't dead by your second drink.

This has not been my experience.  What I *have* found is that the battery display is much less "optimistic" than the iPhones and gives me a truer read.  My iPhone would frequently go from 70=80% charge to dead within an hour.  The EVO is much slower to power down.

I could, but I'd rather it be normally functional just in case.  I know that's not a real worry or anything, I just don't any real reason to do so at the moment, and having a second, similar device would give me a reason to go ahead and do that.

It seems weird that neither the original post nor any of the comments mention the Achewood strip about that.

I think the ETF is for customers who sign on after they increased it, right?
Man, as the thing got slower I use it less...my 3G is a turtle
I gotta say Dave you sold me on the evo, but ill wait to see the new iPhone in rl before I sell my soul

Did the preorder thing at an AT&T store downtown today. It was a little frustrating since the system was so bogged down, but everyone was in pretty good spirits since it was the beginning of the day. Still took like an hour to process.

I think I might be willing to put money on the idea that if I threw the blackberry as hard as I could against, say, my porch, the blackberry might actually shatter.  I mean, I'm going to do it regardless.  It's just a matter of when.

You don't want to mediate the anger like that. Gotta kick the rock, Dr. Johnson.
